Going back to big and the 1960's - I learned to drive in one of these. Remember in the '70's when they capped the national speed limit at 55 mph? This thing came out of the driveway in reverse at 55... I am amazed that I survived my first 2 years of driving, 'cos I was young and dumb and did crazy things.
It was my mom's car. What was a mom doing with one of these? It was a convertible, and it had room in the trunk for golf clubs, that's what. Then again, my best friend's mom had an early '70's Dodge Challenger convertible. They were on to something...
I like the front end on the '69 (which is what we had) more than any other year.

There are a lot of quick boring coupes and sedans in this generation of cars. You can buy a Camry that will beat a lot of cars off the light. Then again, you can buy a lot of cars that will crush the Camry or Accord. And I don't see any of this generation of Japanese cars as "Iconic".
I remember watching an episode of Top Gear where they went to Vegas raceway "the Strip" , of course they had some very nice euro super cars with them. So they go out to bracket race night to show the old Yanks what a proper high performance vehicle is all about. They line up there fancy euro sports car against an average looking chevy pickup built to run bracket style drags, at the green the pickup was just gone while the fancy euro sports car was shifting away through its very expensive 10 speed gear box. It was hilarious to see this pickup completely annihilate this half million dollar sports car, it wasn't even close. The look on Richard Hammonds face was priceless as he watched this seemingly ordinary American pickup truck blow the doors off his uber expensive super car on the quarter mile. Of course on a road course the old pickup wouldn't stand a chance but it wasn't built to do that any more than the super car was built to run 10 second quarter mile times
I recall going to the Chicago Auto Shows in the 60's with my folks. Then, anyone (kids too) could climb around inside the cars, fool around with the controls, touch the engines, whatever. Even some of the exotic Italian stallions. Much different nowadays.

There really aren't any "iconic" cars of this time that are being sold to the general public. Everything tries to look like eveything else. The only unique cars are the "retro" models - PT Cruiser, new Beetle, new T Bird.
Corvair. Had a couple just like these two. Great fun to drive. Ralph Nader sucks.
My Dad had a red one of these to commute to work when I was around 5 or 6 years old. It had a 13-1/2 HP engine made by BMW. It also had a 3 speed manual left hand shift. My mom thought it was frigging death trap so he sold it after about a year.

All three get a "meh" from me. If I never had to see or work on another of them, I wouldn't be upset over it.

Finally something my Ghia could beat on a drag strip.
With the grudging exception of possibly the Skyline or the WRX. Not to "us", but to another segment of the hobby that also like to haul arse. I don't like imports in general, but to me, the Audi R8 and the current BMW M4 are hard to deny.
Used to go spotlighting, out Nundle way, in one of these - '62 International Scout - unregistered, had a 161 grey motor in it. Couldn't kill it with an axe. We'd wait 'til the local cop cruised by, then take off in the opposite direction,
I always wanted an old Dodge Power Wagon. Has there ever been a cooler truck? No!
