My 79 PBass, added pjs in 86 routed the lower cutaway with a band saw that year too. No other mods since then because it's perfect for me. For many years I had a 5 string kit on the bass and it was awesome like that too. Everyone wanted my bass back in those days. I rarely gig with it now, don't want anything to happen to it. My dad bought it for me in 79.
94 Fender Precision Lyte with EMGs, hipshot ultralights and my dremel pickguard. My favorite bass. Ever.
BTW, my amazing pickguard shaping skills are available for a hefty fee.
Do you have any photos of the bass during it's time as a five string? I'd love to see that.
I really dig those AV Hot Rod basses — awesome fit-and-finish quality, in a factory PJ straight from Fender.
What I like most about the J-bass version is the pickup locations, P in the conventional mid J position (closer to the neck than a P-bass), and J bridge in the '70s position (closer to the bridge). IMO, it has a very "Jazzy" tone for a PJ.
Yeah. I really like the 70s j placement. It really adds some nice honk if you want it. (And that's a good thing).
Just ordered some D'Addario Super Light Chromes to try out on her. We'll see how it goes. May post some sound clips if time and technology allow.
In case I haven't posted it before, here's a pic in the general spirit of the club and most definitely not mine. I just posted this pic on a Duff McKagan-related thread. One of his current basses is a refinished Reggie Hamilton-sig body mated to a Geddy Lee-sig neck. Quite a pretty lil' Frankenbass, ja?
I still have the bridge somewhere I'll have to look for it. I think it was made by Wilkinson. Got it from an ad in the back of Guitar Player. The D string had a steinburger type tuner on the bridge and connected at the string tree. The kit came with a new string tree that had a screw in cap and that held the string tight for tuning. It also came with a new nut. The spacing wasn't too close but it was tighter than normal. Once in a while the string tree would loosen up and I would crazy glue it back in. I don't think I have any pictures while it was in action. I would say it was around 89' or 90' when I started using it. In 94 I got a Washburn 6 and put the pbass back to 4 strings. Found a pic online not my bass.

I recently "discovered" the sound with both pups on full and the tone all the way down. It cuts through nice without any high end. Normally I'd only ever use the P with the tone down but with the J there, it adds a bit more definition that just sounds delightful.
I've strayed away from PJ goodness a few times only to come to my senses later. It really is the best possible pickup configuration.

Since a couple of days ago I am a proud owner of a PJ Bass as well. My first bass I put together from parts.Turned out much better than expected.Might end up being my main bass.
For the last 35 years I have only played J basses but a P bass was what I started on, I'm getting nostalgic as I get older so it was time to get another P. I like to solo, so I had to have a J pickup on there. So it's a Fender VM body (I think) , a CEG Hardtails neck, I painted the headstock and added the logo ( sue me
), Ken Smith bridge, EMGX pickups Hipshot tuners and a 2 stage D tuner.
