PJ Club

Fender American Vintage Hot Rod Precision and Tony Franklin fretless.

I suppose I should take a new picture. I recently bought a Jazz neck for the Hot Rod with black matching headstock, I didn't buy it for that though I just prefer J necks, I also took off the bridge and put a bent plate on it.

I had the TF modded with another volume and a side jack. The neck on the TF feels like a Jazz even though the nut is 1 5/8ths.

I am interested in joining this club, but I’ve honestly never owned a PJ bass. I was always a Jazz guy, but recently I got a Fender CS P and have been using that a lot. I’ve really started to see why it’s so widely used.

So I’ve been thinking of getting a PJ to supplant my Jazz bass. Commuting to the P, but having the Jazz to add in a little snap on the songs that need them. Is this reasonable? What is the PJ sound?
If you feel "at home" with Jazz basses, why not get one with a P/J configuration? An Aerodyne is an obvious choice, but I, personally, feel a Fender Reggie Hamilton Jazz has a superior placement for the P-pup. (As much as I love my 'Dyne, the RH-sig's pickup positioning really does make a difference! ;)) That, or if you'd prefer something with a passive configuration, you could even get a less expensive model, a WD Music RH-sig pickguard and have it routed to accept the new pickup, like so...

That is a good thought. But I’m starting to find I really like the P neck and body.

My wife bought me a Fender American Vintage Hot Rod Precision a few years ago. She was shopping in the Salvation Army and found it, with the chain saw case for $129.95!!! It only had 3 strings, the clear protective plastic was half off just hanging and filthy, I did a super cleaning, new strings and a complete setup. It's almost perfect, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while!

Man, what a deal! I bought mine brand new online in 2013-14 on sale, I forgot what I paid, something like 1500 bucks. The thing knocks walls over with the vintage '63 pickup.

Picked up a Yamaha TRBX 174 yesterday!

I was looking for cheap PJ. This thing beat out the Squier Affinities and Jaguars, Ibanez TMB and even the BB234 (slim margin there, basically over price and aesthetic.)

Im loving the neck, the tone, the overall feel. I’m 95%* sure this was the same model as my 2nd bass (*back when I payed no attention to models and specs! :roflmao:)

Hey my PJ brothers, I need some advice. Looking for a PJ. Price less than $700. I like the sb2 but I want a tone control. I am a little bit of a gear snob and I can’t make my self buy a Squier at this moment. I have played the affinity. Actually not bad. I may Have to change my mind. I have seen a fender active pj on Reverb. Thoughts? Suggestions?

I love my Squier Jag with an upgraded neck pup but, with the new Fender prices, you may have to look used. I just sold my Mustang PJ for $695 because I did not like the slab body.

Yeah, I have sold 2 fender p basses because sound is not clean enough for me. Sold 2 fender jazz basses, don’t sound is not big enough and not crazy about the jazz shape. Only one I have kept is my Sterling ray4
