PJ Club

Ditched the DR Black Beauties on my Yamaha PJ for some DR Pure Blues (slightly aged from another bass, maybe 3 months play time.) Took it to rehearsal last night. Ran direct to the Mackie Mixer, into the Peavey PA/Keyboard amp. Pickups full on, tone ~60%.

Man it sounded good! Tight, articulate
and punchy, but not overly bright and metallic. Sure did miss having a PJ! :bassist:

I picked up this Yamaha Attitude Standard locally from a Craigslist ad.
As usual it came super cheap and in "I never played it so I'm selling it" condition.
Bought it for the perfect (for me) neck shape/size, the nicely shaped alder body, great hardware, and Yamaha quality.
I hate the paint color and I don't really care that it has a J pickup, but it a really nice bass.

That's a nice-looking Attitude! Red is sexy AF IMO
That color looks like Fushia hot pink and I am not a fan of pink anything.
I guess it could be worsr and be a soft pastel pink, which would force me to repaint the bass.
In this case, I am going to ditch the white pickguard and go Black/White/Black and see if it makes the Fushia paint look more red.

Kites I had one of those too a million years...same color...and I hated the color too, even though Im a huge lover of red basses. I sanded mine down and had a buddy of mine shoot it with Candy Metallic red he had left over in his auto body shop, and it turned out killer! Great score, they are nice basses and I really liked the neck too!

It's strange, I have two Yamaha Attitude basses, the other one is my Attitude Custom.... and I like them because the neck feels fantastic (and Yamaha build quality).
I don't have them because they are Billy Sheehan basses, his whole thing is way too complicated for my very basic needs.
They both have a 1 - 11/16" nut width which makes them the biggest necks I've got and somehow they feel fantastic to my not large hands.
I think the flatness front to back is what is working so well.
My Peaveys all have a 1 - 1/2" nut.
My Guild Pilot is a 1 - 1/2" nut.
My EBMM SUB Bass has 1 - 5/8" nut and it feels like my biggest (slowest feeling) neck.
My Squier CV 50's P neck feels bigger/meatier than the two Attitudes.
The Attitude string to string spacing feels roomy and comfortable but the shallow depth of the neck keeps it from feeling large and slow.

Hopefully a black pickguard will make me like the color better.

So, you and I have very similar tastes in basses...but we knew that already..LOL
I love me some Guild Pilots too!
But I too owned 2 Yammy Attitudes...but my first one was the Attitude Limited...with the HB in the sweet spot, and the 3 or 4 way pickup selector switch, and that one was my favorite and the reason I bought the Fuschia Standard. Yeah I dig the flatness of the fretboard too so I didnt really mind the wider nut.

I fell in love with the Pilot neck, but after a while my Peavey necks (especially 1987) won that battle because Peavey rolled the fretboard edges more.
The Attitude thing came out of left field, I only bought that Attitude Custom because I saw it listed in GC's used basses and knew they had made a massive mistake.
It was priced at used Squier price and I know used Attitude's consistently list at $1999.99 on their site.
I don't think they knew it had the woofer pickup under the pickguard, and I don't think they knew the bridge had piezo pickups and somehow did not notice that the back of the bass had a stereo/mono switch on the cavity cover.
They must not have known what an Attitude bass was and figured it was some weird Yamaha bass model.
You would think the unique to Billy's basses fret position markers would get their attention.
The Attitude Custom has all the stuff the LTD has with the addition of the piezo bridge, but does not have the scalloped fretboard cuts up high, and I do not need those at all.
I bought it just to get something super cool for next to nothing but then quickly got used to that unusual neck and it felt better and better until it is the neck size/shape I like the best.
When the Standard showed up on Craigslist, I figured why not have a simple PJ version with rosewood fretboard for a change of feel.
I think the fretboard radius is Yamaha's standard 10" but the depth of the neck is shallow, which is what lit me up.
I think maybe the old Fender Precision neck Billy had on his original Wife Bass had the old 1 - 3/4" nut but the depth of the neck is flatter than when Fender moved to their next version of P bass neck.
Makes me wonder about the wide nut Peavey neck on some of the Patriots and T40, T45, maybe even T20.
I might like the wide old Peavey necks!

Okay, I am sorry for this very off topic, very long post to others in this thread.

Funny where you end up while doing searches in here - I'm looking around for more info on Yamaha Attitude Limited 3 basses and I wind up in this PJ place... And I see a friend of mine is hanging out in here as well - hi, 58kites...!

Well, as long as I'm here, I'll share that I am a diehard PJ pup fan - love the sound(s) and PJ setups are on most of everything I own or have owned in the past...

Happy New Year 2023, everyone - here's a few of my personal PJ New Year's "fireworks" for you...;)

Cool! I've been thinking about trying some MFDs in a Fender P bass. Drop right it?
Yes they do!

I do get a funny thing happening, that the tone pot rolled back cuts some gain when the volume is at less then 100%, and J at 0%.

On my Fallout I get consistent output at any volume level with the tone open or closed.
That's a non-consequential quirk, even though I've followed the G&L SB2 wiring.

Cool. Yeah, it would be in a traditional P configuration so that quirk would be a non issue. Thanks for the reply!
