Wait a sec. I'll admit I skimmed a bit, but "dancing cougars?" Therein lies the rub; what demographic are most cover bands appealing to...and WHERE? Like I mentioned in my other recent thread about cover bands, not everyone is gonna want the same stuff. 20-somethings would probably rather hear 80s or 90s covers than 60s. What makes a song "good"? Well, the biggest target is still the youth of today...NOT the, er, cougars. So where does THAT leave it? Do most 20-somethings have any concept of "good" songs, never mind the accuracy of others' interpretations? I don't know. What do you guys think and what would statistics show us?
that's where I'm at in this thread too, and probably what the OP was driving at. one of the least favorite things to hear from bandmates is the suggestion to take a song and "just rock it up" or "do a punk version" of it. Translation: we aren't good enough to learn it so we'll cover it up with lots of distortion.
Here's a couple for the "not note-for-note" crowd.
Dirty Loops Baby (Justin Bieber cover) - YouTube
Just Dance - (Lady GaGa Cover ) - YouTube
Thanks for those. Still not my cup of tea but a great example of why it's not necessary to worry about what the original sounds like.
I've never understood the "cover it up with lots of distortion" comment.
When playing distorted guitar or bass, I find that I have to be more careful, not less. For me, distortion has always highlighted sloppiness, not hidden it. Sloppy playing with overdrive typically results in terrible noises for me. Or it just gets muddy and sounds bad.

Note for Note = BORING!
I really don't understand people at concerts that say, "That was great! It sounded just like the album!" Why bother going to a concert if you think a good concert is a note for note reproduction of the album. Hell, go to a hip-hop concert where 90% of what you hear is pre-recorded, if that floats your boat. I much rather go to a concert and see/hear what the musicians do with the song at that moment. That is what makes it special; it's magic.
