roscoe beck had sent me an email when i asked him a question about his acrylic thingy...but i never did find out....is it safe to cut acrylic with a table saw or is it splinter/crack city?

I work with a lot of acrylic at work making acoustic drum shields (ClearSonic Mfg.) and it routers and cuts pretty easily. It's a lot like working with metal, slow speed drills and routers and patience. It will crack if you go too fast, but all in all, it's pretty durable stuff.

I actually think we have some scrap pieces thick enough to make these briges if anyone would like some material. I think I'll try to make one this weekend. Oh, and the material in made from Cyro and is clear with an abrasion resistant coating.

actually, that's not a ramp... that's a thumbrest. A ramp actually goes under the strings and reduces the space between the strings and the body, thus giving you a consistant amount of "purchase" on the strings with your finger pads.

a thumbrest, is simply a place to rest your thumb.

I have a ramp between the bridge and neck pups on my red Conklin. However since it "bridges the gap" between the two pups I've taken to calling it a "bridge" (links two points) instead of a ramp (begins at a fixed point but ends at an unfixed point).

I use a ramp similar to Mark's, but I call it a ramp since calling it a bridge could be confused with that other thingy which the strings are anchored to.



I have it on my MTD fretless, and am thinking of adding them to my Conklin and Yamaha.

Here's the ramp that was built for my old Nordstrand. When I got the bass from Carey I adjusted it so it was very close to the strings. I'll not play without a ramp now. Best thing I ever did for my playing.

i actually have two ramps on my nordstrand, one for fingerstyle (between the pick-ups, so mark would call it "bridge") and one for slap (at the end of the fingerboard, like norm stockton).

Hey andy, I made myself a ramp out of some nice maple i had since you said it helped your technique a lot. I really like the thing a lot! It definitly helps, and it just feels better to me. BTW why'd you sell that bass?! its gorgeous!

Additionally, or more specfically, anyone know of a Sadowsky with one? Pretty much the same need as Flatwound, since the Sadowsky's a J style bass. . .

Any woodworker should be able to knock one up for you. You could even get some pine, a saw and some sandpaper and put a prototype together, it's not hard.

can you slap properly with a ramp?

its supposed to go between teh pickups on a two pickup bass. i think on the GW bass it goes from pickup to neck.

Depends on your slap technique. If you're into double thumbing, it's probably a HUGE help.

Ive always wanted a ramp on my bass, and i didnt really consider making one myself until i happened upon this thread, haha.
So i looked around, found a small block of wood, took out an ancient saw and with some handy sandpaper, viola!
Its might be ugly, (i might get a luither to do a good one for me in the near future) but it sure serves its purpose! woohoo
Helps me play much more consistently at significantly higher volumes and also serves as a thumb rest.

Took me 4 hours and alot of sweat by the way. Now, if only i had the right equipment or machines.
