Playstation 4 VS Xbox One

The used game thing is tricky...An awesome game like the most recent Tomb Raider LOST money despite selling 3.4 mill copies in the first 3 weeks. That is considered a huge success for the gaming industry.

If you can't make money selling 3.4 million copies of a game you are doing something seriously wrong.

Videogaming is going the way of Hollywood cinema. Millions of dollars invested, millions of dollars have to be spent in advertising and millions of copies need to be sold just to cover costs. This means you have to produce crappy games that appeal to a mass audience just to even hope to sell enough copies to break even.

If publishers require each console to have an individual license for each game, they could perhaps lower prices of games, and price more competitively, but their backs are against the wall. To produce a game with the quality of Tomb Raider, you must put considerable resources into it and these big budget, big studio releases we all love so much and they will disappear because they are almost impossible to make money on unless you are Call of Duty. Otherwise we in general will see a great decline in the quality of games and the market will veer more toward indie developers.

I don't think this is a good thing. And do you really think publishers are going to lower the price just because they can? They have removed the competition, they don't need to sell them cheap anymore because there is no other option. You can't buy them second hand, and I'd be betting that you'll only be able to purchase games and activation codes through Xbox Live, or through authorized re-sellers (at least in time) where prices can be fixed and maintained by the publisher.

Big-Budget games need to die a slow and painful death. There has been little or no innovation in mainstream gaming for years for exactly the reasons you are talking about, they need to invest millions of dollars, pay hundreds of staff and advertise the **** out of games so they can hope to sell enough copies to cover their costs, but it's a vicious cycle. They can't try anything new, it might not work and could cost them millions of dollars.

So the majority of the market is stuck buying the same game every year with some new pictures or even new "features", but nothing is actually ever new. It's too risky because there are too many millions at stake.

And in 8 or 10 years when Microsoft shut off the Xbox One servers? There's a whole generation of kids who can't go back and play their favourite old games on their old consoles the way we can, once the back-end services are gone it's essentially a glorified plastic box. You already can't play original Xbox games online, but imagine if you couldn't play them at all. Heck, the console wouldn't even work!

You're absolutely right. A stick, five burlap sacks (one large, four small), and a ton of jello always warm behind the original idea will help get the "human" presence there.

Haha.

I'd say there is a fair chance people will manufacture a piece of hardwear to plug in instead of a kinect, which tells it there is a kinect on and working and circumvents the whole issue.

But you really shouldn't need to buy a piece of aftermarket hardware (that MS will try and shut down) just to use the damn console. Or "Entertainment System" should I say.

Sounds like I should check out the OUYA. I'm no PS fan and microsoft is really getting under my skin with this one.

OUYA isn't really much of an alternative, hardware wise it's really only suited to hardcore gaming. It's more for the sort of games you get on Xbox arcade, along with emulators and that sort of thing. Got plenty of promise, but it depends a little what sort of gaming you are into.

Mine showed up from the kickstarter two weeks ago. Unfortunately their customer service is shocking and they still haven't got back to me regarding account issues, so I haven't been able to use it these past two weeks :hmm:

Cool little piece of hardware, great ideas, but the support isn't there yet. I've been patient, but it sort of a bit disappointing that you can't get even get a response despite being one of the (admittedly thousands of) people who funded their company to start off with.

The Ps4 will be 349 pounds. I assume you can build something at least as good for around that amount?

Aye, I know, and not much you can do with a PC at that price point sadly. Off the shelf stuff isn't great at that price point and putting something together would add up quickly, even if you cut out things like the OS (legit for once, MSDN account! :hiding: )

I look at consoles this way; if you're limited financially and you don't think it will improve but want a quick fix anyhow, it's the deal to move on.

I'm just willing to save because everything I do creatively would be on PC at some point so it's just one more thing it can do.

I do both because they both serve different purposes, and it's also to do with what other people will be using. I'm looking at dropping 3-4x the price of a PS4 on my next PC.

Though it certainly won't take long til it's significantly cheaper to put together a PC which outspecs the next gen significantly.

It's Microsoft's fault. Had they listened to their community they would have realized that 9 out of 10 people loathed the new system and its requirements of its user. They made their bed and now are laying in it.

It's still a bummer.Generally speaking I like MS' exclusive titles (halo, fable, gow, etc). I prefer the controller of the 360 to the ps3. (seriously, the thumbpad placement on the PS controller is just stupid, always has been.)

They'll change if their product goes wrong. Lack of change increases risk of failure; m$ doesn't care that little about their product they'd stick with a bad decision, even I'll admit that.

I see, I never spend much on gaming PC... Well, I re-use the same case, power supply, etc. from build to build so it makes upgrading cheap. It's sporting 8gb ddr3, an i5 2500 and a 6870 on an asus p8p67. the storage is WD caviar black, I'm too cheap to make the ssd jump.

Pretty sure I did not spend much more than the canadian equivalent of 350 pounds on it. But that was some time ago.

Anyways, it's in a box in my closet.

edit: How long after the xbox one release will 360 games still come out?

For 1200 [edit: didn't specify currency. It's Ameros. US dollars, that is] I came up with a build that was i7 and had 32 gigs of ram, etc,... Prices aren't that great but you WILL make it beyond the next gen at least (u think). And if it doesn't work out I'd still have a good music composing machine

That's possible. But they will probably do what Nintendo does with the DS/3DS flashcarts... Patch the system when a new one comes out, and if it recognizes unauthorized software/hardware, they brick the device.

Lol I've seen a lot of "wii remotes" off standard brand that didn't work. I don't think it's difficult to conceive a manufacturer could create a kinect designed to function like a dud.
