Back in the late 80's/early 90's, my friend Mike got caught with some weed. The lady cop who booked him kept referring to him as "Mr. Mellow," and we all agreed that was a great name for him.
We had a running gag about his "no need to ever worry" attitude, and said he should have an advice column called "ask Mr. Mellow."
It would go something like this:
Dear Mr. Mellow:
My car has something wrong with it. Every now and again, the engine catches on fire, and I'm concerned that it could cause an explosion. What should I do?
Signed, Fire Danger
Dear Fire Danger:
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Sooner or later it will either stop catching fire, or if it causes an explosion, you can buy a new car.
Dear Mr. Mellow:
I think my girlfriend is cheating on me. Sometimes, she comes home late, and has lame excuses why. Sometimes when she's sleeping, she says another guy's name in a breathy voice. I don't think she loves me anymore. What should I do?
Signed, Heartbroken
Dear Heartbroken:
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Either she loves you, or she doesn't. I doubt there's anything you can do about it.
So that's the idea. When I first got on the internet, way back in the nineties, I was trying to join some forum or page, or whatever they had back then, and I thought I'd be "Mr. Mellow," but amazingly, someone else already had that name. I thought, "well, I'm not really all that mellow, anyway. I'm actually kind of intense, but I'm mellowin'."
