POLL: Which Pickguard For My New P Bass?

i love those gold pickguards but not with a tobacco sunburst... i voted Tort

At one time I was looking at some manufactured plastic "pearl" material to turn some reel seats (think MOTS PG in the round), and in studying up on it I learned it was made mostly from trash, or more specifically castoff and swarf from plastics manufacturing which was processed to achieve certain size and mix characteristics, before being combined with clear or tinted binder and cast into slabs from which a wide variety of items were made. Other types were made using paper and/or plastic trash of different hues chopped up to certain sizes and randomly mixed before being combined with a binder and cast. The tortloaf pic reminded me of all that and got me to wondering if our PG's are made the same way.

I'd definitely go with the tort. I like the gold and realize it's "supposed" to go with maple, but the tort just seems to mesh better with the tobacco sunburst IMO. You can't really lose either way though. They both look pretty classy.

That works very well.

I'm leaning toward the "RW Tort, maple gold" crowd.

Problem: Can't find a 13-hole gold anodized (brushed aluminum, NOT plastic) pickguard for my MIM Precision. Once I nail one of those down, I can drill my own holes for pickup cover and tug bar.

Any ideas where I can find a MIM Standard 13-hole true gold anodized aluminum pickguard?

Get the Fender gold guard. It's 9 holes that line up perfectly and already have tugbar/pickup cover holes pre-drilled.

Do the 9 holes on the '57 guard line up with the existing 13 holes on a MIM Standard?

Yes, but you will need to make one screw hole by yourself for the screw that will be between the two knobs. Otherwise all of them match.

If I'm going for the '57 look, I may as well add a tug bar and the pickup cover holes, even if I don't instal a pickguard cover.

I had them put one on my new Oly White/Maple Am. Std. P before it ever left the shop. Looks much better than the stock brown tort(which still has the original plastic and label safely stored away). MIM should be no different.

You guys were right: The Genuine Fender replacement was drilled and cut perfectly, it only required the drilling of one additional hole. That is uncommon in my experience with pickguards, and I'm very happy I didn't have to bust out the dremel. Tug bar added for the '57 look. She plays like butter and sounds just like a P Bass should.

Brown tort will be reserved for the next 3TS/RW board P Bass.

Sunset lighting. It's gold. Maybe I'll try again at high noon or the next gig.
