POLL: Which Pickguard For My New P Bass?

I voted tort, but I like the idea of black too. The gold looks good on the solid colors, but the sunburst would go best with the tort or black IMO. I tend to like the more classic looks (somehow I ended up with a Schecter Riot-5, which I LOVE), and the gold on sunburst is just kind of meh...

Can't get more classic than the original 57 P's in two tone sunburst with a gold pickguard.

If you have to put that on your bass then the nitrate tort from Bass parts resource is the closest to vintage.

all of their tort guards are 3-ply, which to me, doesn't make it look vintage at all. IMO, to look correct, they should be 4-ply. personally, i've always thought that 3 ply tort guards look funky.

The pattern on the vintage nitrate tort however does look closer to original than anything else I have seen.

Among those who have seen them, general consensus seems to be that Pickguardian makes the best reproduction of the classic 60s Fender tortoiseshell guards. They are 4-ply nitrocellulose (correct smell!). See posts #3 and 41 in this thread, along with many pics of originals for comparison:

I like it, not as much as the blond but I still like it.

If it was my bass, I'd make my own pickplate with textured red acrylic and a mirror backing. You can always put another pickplate back on if you intend to sell it later.

For the poll, I voted tort. I'm not a huge fan of it, but it looks a lot better to me than that gold does. My preference is that no bass should be a color that goes well on a toilet bowl.

I like the gold only with the 2 tone burst al'la mid to late '50s.

3 tone bursts just don't look right to me with the gold... tort all the way~

The thing with the anodized gold, from a design point of view, is the maple board flows into the body and is met with a similar hue in the gold. So there's a visual connection there. It's the same connection many see when a rosewood board flows into a brown or black pickguard.

The board on my bass is maple, like the pics in the OP.

Man, this is a tough choice.
