I just used in a post a common four letter slang word for excrement beginning with S and ending with T fully expecting to see **** in my post. Instead it changes it to "poopie"? No shaging way man. I know the rules are the rules but I write the way I speak and if that needs to get ****ed out to save some imaginary delicate ears I'm resigned to that BUT DO NOT CHANGE WHAT I SAY INTO SOME CUTESIE MAKE ME WANNA PUKE JUNE CLEAVER BS. You've make some excellent changes to the site lately but this is not one of them. It's utterly outrageous and begs for a creative workaround.

The benefit is for the mods not to have to police the site so much. The benefit is a swear-free environment for kids, because when people are asked nicely to not swear here, they just do it anyway, and wait for an infraction.
The benefit to you doesnt matter. You are a PARTICIPANT, not an admin here. Start up Basstalkers.com and swear or asterisk yourself into a coma. And like the other bass sites, practically no one will read it, and it'll turn into a giant boring bro-fest, where you and the three other people reading the site can talk about how lame Talkbass is.
The mods don't want people to swear here, and yet people still do, defiantly. I have nothing against any words, I swear like a sailor daily. But rules are rules. Break them and there will be consequences. And YOU don't get to choose the consequences, or have to like them. Understand yet?
You have ZERO rights here if the powers that be say so. And no hissy fit, no matter how childish you make it, will change that.
This isn't a free speech issue!

Excellent, thanks for saving me time typing.

I'll just second what you said - every shagging word of it.

Except that you can't say **** here, and you know that. No amount of literary importance will ever make the word appear- at the very most, it will appear as four asterisks in a row. If the word is of such meaning that it needs to be shown as those four asterisks, then type those four asterisks. But that's not really the case 99% of the time, now is it? Most people who are typing out **** aren't doing it because it's the very best word for the job. Whatever meaning you want to say is behind the use of using **** is negated before you write it, as you know the word won't appear. So it boils down to a matter of laziness, either by not expanding your vocabulary to find a better way to express yourself or by expecting the filter to do the work for you by autocensoring it so you don't get a profanity infraction.

And really, no one's writing novels here. Have a sense of humor for poopie's sake.
I accept the fact that certain words are prohibited as a matter of TB policy. I agree that everyone should know the rules and abide by them. I applaud the fact that the rules can be enforced by an automated system so Mods don't have to spend time enforcing the policy. I support the recommendation that if one wants to see one's text appear as a series of asterisks, or the word "bleep," or whatever, they should just type it that way in the first place; indeed, that's exactly what I do.

I agree that it would admirable for people to expand their vocabularies and find other, non-profane ways of expressing themselves, and I agree that in many cases the use of profanity is "lazy." (However, I don't see why either of these points is relevant.)

All that said, I believe it is wrong to change a word that someone has written into another word, particularly if doing so potentially changes the meaning of the idea that the writer intended to express. Bleeping a word with a string of asterisks at least makes clear to readers that the writer used a "bad word," even if it isn't clear which exact word it was, and that fact conveys meaningful information that enables the reader to correctly interpret the idea intended by the writer. Changing the word to a different word -- as with changing "s***" to "poopie," can radically change the way readers interpret what the writer intended. In my opinion that crosses a very important line.

I'm not convinced that people are going to be radically misinterpreting posts by the change. At most, I see someone reading a post and going "hmm, poopie, that's an odd word choice." To say that the meaning of an entire post will be radically changed by the substitution of one word seems pretty unlikely. If you can link to some posts that this word substitution has caused a massive misunderstanding, I might relent on this facet of the argument.

And with that being said ... if you follow the rules (and keep in mind that the no profanity rule is rule #2 ... not like it's hidden in the fine print of the rule book), you will NEVER have your words changed. How I see your argument is: "I don't want to follow the rules, and I don't like the consequences of my not following the rules." I mean, come on. Read the rules, follow them, and have fun. This should be a 100% non-issue.

I'm not expecting to change anyone's mind about word substitution being "wrong," but I feel like at MOST it should be a "I don't like this but whatever I'll deal with it" situation.

Wow, just wow.

The one thing that changing poopie to poopie does that changing poopie to **** doesn't is drive home the point that swearing will not be tolerated. Sounds like the Mods got fed up cleaning up after folks who ignored the rules and are getting a bit of revenge to me. Seeing your vehement "poopie" rendered as "poopie" ought to cure even the most egregious offender. Clever. Talk about first-world problems.

Just a reminder to all that Rule #2

Rule #2: Do not post profanity. Because this forum is viewed by bassists of all ages, all posts must be suitable for viewing by minors. All profanity must be completely covered with asterisks, completely substituted with "@%$#" symbols. Better yet, leave it out. Any use of creative lettering or partially masked profanity is not allowed. Obscene material is not permitted, nor are links to websites containing such material or anything deemed inappropriate for minors. If what you have to say wouldn't be suited for network TV, don't post it here.

...also pertains to links. Reading is fundamental, folks.

I disagree with every post in this thread .
Automating " best bass for metal " to anything else would be an improvement .

Anything that's so very tired automated to a repeat sign would be educational .

NewMember1 : " What's the "repeat sign " ?

Newmember2 ; " That's when you go back to the previous double bar line and play the passage again ."

Then newmember1 will have to learn what a double bar line is etc etc . . .
