So, you've tried his regular (non-split) single coil '51 pup? Not to your liking?

I wasn't that fond of the Fralins in my Lakland JO5 (jazz)... too vintage for me, but the Fralin split P in my Lakland BG sounds pretty good. But, I have to admit that the humbucker split P basses aren't my goto sound. I much prefer the '51 style's treble and attack.

yes. i've tried his non split tele bass pickup, his non split, and split coil j bass and i didn't find them to sound vintage correct to me. IMO, they are too mid heavy, and too stiff/harsh sounding. i've also tried his strat and tele pickup with the same results. i guess fralin's interpretation of a vintage pickup is nothing like mine.

when i want vintage, i use duncans.

I have been purposely avoiding this thread for MONTHS, because I have painful, heart-wrenching, keep-you-up-at-night GAS for an early 50's styled P.

I finally broke down today & drooled over this entire thread. I hate all of you. Maybe hate is too strong a word.....especially when I'll be asking you guys if I can sleep on your couch when my wife kicks me out of the house for buying ANOTHER freakin' bass.

Seriously gentlemen, some lovely basses. I raise my glass...

Fender 51 reissues generally sell pretty cheap in classifieds here.
If you have enough band income to support buying one, I can't see why the CEO would take issue with that.

ymmv, etc.

Band income....oh how I miss band income.
I'll make one of those basses happen one day Chef, but my wife seems to think owning double digit guitars is a bit extreme. So I'm in the "9" holding pattern.

I actually cant complain too much, she's actually very cool about gear & has bought me a couple of beautiful basses.


Back to drool over all of your blonde/single coil goodness....

If you can find a deal on one, try the '54RI/"Sting"...if you think you can live with the dread 12th fret autograph inlay.

Many years ago, "Dude" Barr talked me out of a '51RI in favor of the Sting as a more practical bass and he was right, though it takes a lot of setting up.

The only caveat if you're buying used is to scrupulously check the frets. These have the tiny "vintage" frets which are fine with flats, but get eaten up very quickly with rounds.
