Just got the Subdecay NoiseBox. I turned it on and it gave me goosebumps. Exactly what I've been looking for all along! I'll try and get around to a formal review, but for now, just some initial impressions.
It has elements of ring mod, envelope filter, and gated fuzz.
One thing I never liked about ring mod (for melodic music) is the seeming unpredictablity of the modulated signal. The NoiseBox, on the other hand provides elements of controlled chaos. What I mean is that you can flirt with disaster, but stay on the edge without slipping over. It generates some glitches and unusual pitches, but by varying one's attack, you can control how far the envelope pushes things.
The gated nature of the circuit is really neat. I got some cool synth like textures just by touching the strings and then muting them with my right hand. It made for interesting percussive sounds.
Using my bass's onboard EQ also made for some tasty timbres as well. I maxed the midrange and the signal pinched audibly (in a good, mix cutting way). Throwing in different blends of my P and J p'up also noticeably varied the sound coming from this excellent little blue box.
The NoiseBox isn't playing well with other effects (yet-just got it, remember). But I was just running it after my entire pedalboard because I was too lazy to swap out power supplies and cables. Pushing it with my tremolo messed with the box's gate and did this bizarre warbling/see-saw noise.
Judging by my very brief noodling with this thing, I'd say it's farking excellent.
