Pre CBS Fender Photo Thread

what does that mean?? Who went into hiding? bounties? Witch hunts? Just curious what happened to that thread. I was quite interested in learning the things experts look at when evaluating vintage instruments.

What's the scoop on the green one?

It was a joke saying that now I had bought another 62 in sea Foam Green and one in Shell Pink that I'm gonna be hunted down for getting two of the rarest custom colors for $100 bucks a piece.

Lol Nah I asked them to take it down when I found out that people actually did start contacting the family of the original owner. Until I could speak with them and figure out what was going on.
After speaking to the daughter all was good but there was so much drama wrapped up in the first two threads I never requested them to be taken out of hiding.
It's just not worth all the fuss. People were getting suspended warnings were being issued almost daily because of it.

John D should get some credit here for this idea as he was the motivation behind it. I hope he will join me in getting this thing off the ground.


Only rules are that it of coarse be Fender and of coarse be Pre CBS.

Come on guys get em out and dust em off. Lets see them in all their wonderful glory.

I'm amazed here. This is my '64 P Bass. Look at the neck information. It's the SAME day as yours, Dave. Also, our basses look like Twin Brothers. So Strange. I bought mine in 1970. It's been through a few wars, seemingly like yours ...

I know there are more pre CBS basses out there, where are they all at? ? ? ?

Thanks to those that have posted their beautiful basses this far.

Sorry I'm a bit anxious to see what pops out of the wood work.

I was under the impression that the 5 was not the day but the neck style or profile or something.
Like on my Jazz it's stamped 7 NOV 62 A and I'm told the 7 stands for Jazz Bass or something to that effect.

Is the 5 for a P?

Here's a pretty cool Fender bass.
An OCT 66 Precision neck I spotted at a vintage store and just HAD to have.
After spending a fair amount of time trying to find an unmolested body within a few years give or take from '66...
I saw a Mexi Jazz body on craigs for $80.
So I saw this as my opportunity to experiment with various pickups without endangering the originality of a vintage Fender.
Added the American Standard guard to replace the beat up white one.
I was lucky in that it didn't take much tinkering to get the setup to a really nice action.
I can play fingerstyle and hit 'em fairly hard before clanking off of the frets.
Wow, it's great. I really love the C nut width.

It now has Area Js in it and they are the answer for me.
They are everything the DiMarzio ad copy says they are.
Thanks as well to all TBers that supplied great opinions on the Area Js.
And yeah, I guess I will go for a Black with Tort number soon.
Soon as I take some better pics of baby.

oh. I missed the drama part. Last I saw there was discussion about whether the finish was factory or not. So the green one is a '62 as well? Looks in great shape.

I have read that the 5 is for Precision. 7 indicates Jazz
Other numbers for Strats, teles, etc.
Month and year after the number...
Look at hundreds of neck date photos as per ebay and all
and you'll see that it's a consistent explanation.

I did, it's all original (Minus the finish which was done in 63 in Nebraska, and is the correct DuPont Shell Pink)
It was bought as a sunburst and immediately sent off to be painted the Shell Pink.
The original owner wanted it to match Elvis's Cadillac, and wanted something that would grab his audiences attention.
This is why he said he chose this color.

Please forgive me for not wanting to share the appraisal amount. And I know you'll probably not understand why and well I really don't either. I just know it's something I'd rather keep between this pretty pink bass and I.

My'62 jazz on top with 10 yr old pro refin by Lays guitar in Ohio. My 64 P lower left with 8 yr. old refin. BTW, our own johnk_10 (John Kallas) recently worked on the 62 J. It had developed a slight backbow with no tension on the trussrod. He brought it back to outstanding playability. Good thing that he did. It is, by far, the best neck I've ever laid my hands on! I've had both basses since the mid to late 70's.

Lol no I was being sarcastic, The green is nothing more than my shell pink in disguise.
The entire post was just me being stupid.
Although now that I look at it I really REALLY wish I had a Sea Foam Green Jazz Bass.

Sorry If I sent the wrong message, I didn't think it would come out looking so cool.
If you look at the picture good you can tell everything in it is grey scale and the color is just the pink with a ton of contrast and hue turned up.

I just went back and looked at the pic and it actually looks a lot more real than I thought it did at first.

Damn I could'a done this on the first and got all kinds of people stirred up. Lol
