I believe they both have their place I have both and enjoy playing them but, let me add I enjoy playing all in my collection I am after all a bass player.

This is a flawed argument, as the lower case j needs a second stroke to apply the dot.
A J Scrabble tile is worth more than a P points-wise, yet the P can be used in far more words.
Just out of curiosity,I understand they may not work for you but, what do you mean they don't cut the mustard with a live band? Or do you mean YOUR live band in particular.
And you should never buy a bass because of how they look...imagine how many dollars we'd both spend? haha
Peace!
My live band of course. Many others make them sound incredible. I've always been drawn to Jazz Basses because I love both the way they look and they way they sound when I'm sitting on the couch playing through a practice amp, but something in the low mids is always missing with a full band. I've bought over a dozen Jazz Basses based on the "THIS time...it's going to be different!" rationale, and it never is, so I stick to the P because it works for me.
Why is it that a HUGE percentage of the posts and threads on this forum are about why something is so much better than something else and the person initiating the post always happens to own the something that is the best.
Are there just a lot of insecure bass players or would this apply to any topic that involves humans?

GREAT QUESTION!!!!! I never understood why we can't just give our honest opinions and try to be helpful when we can instead of trashing someone's opinion...
I thought the site was called Talkbass and not TRASHbass
This must be the weekly P vs J thread. Move along...... nothing to see here. I own both, play both, gig both. There is no one bass better than the other.

None are more gooder. The P and the J are the same amount of gooder.
Weekly?? there have been about 10 in the last couple of days.
There will likely be a brand new thread started by someone next week entitled "Proof that J basses are better than P basses".
I'm going to go ahead and start today thinking about what I'm going to post in that thread. I want plenty of time between now and then to think of the best thing I can say, because I really want it to be good and make sure I impress as many people as I can with my post. After all, that's what posting in internet forums is all about..................isn't it?!
EDIT: I was wrong. There are *two* reasons. The other reason is to try to find fault with someone else in the presence of others, especially if that "someone else" likes something different than they like. Good ol' humans. We can always count on humans, eh? What a lovely species.
Man, I bet those losers like John Paul Jones, Will Lee, Jaco, Marcus, Jeremy had talkbass to figure out what really worked with all those situations they worked in. I feel bad for Will Lee and Ricky Minor in particular, blowing it every night on Tv...sheesh
