Pulled the trigger on vintage Fender Precision...

Nice one! Here's my ash body '73. all original except the bridge.

@StuartV: that is a sharp looking bass you have there. was shoreline gold a stock color then, or is that just something you liked? either way, john did a nice job on it.

@johnk_10: thanks for the reassurance. the ones i have looked at from that era have been hit or miss. you would know, i think i emailed a few of them to you wth questions. ;) ill probably ship it out to you in the spring, once i get a little time with her and my schedule opens up. (not to mention my tax return comes too) but im super excited to see the end result, itll be exactly what i want.

i was in the neighborhood and decided to swing by and see her. stopped into elderly's and had a mini jam session. i played through one of the new bassman series amps.

my impressions:
the first thing i noticed was how light it actually was, i felt like i was tossing it around. i like heavier basses generally speaking but this is something i can get over easily with this one. the body finish was definitely a do-it-yourselfer job, it was poorly done and is in need of a refin. hardware shows its age and the bass feels and plays nicely. the tone knob wasnt as responsive as i would have hoped but i noticed a slight difference. i think once i have john give it the once over it will play like it did new in 1973, if not better. still im happy with my purchase and i hope that the next time i go back its to bring her home.

Just curious what did you pay for this as the price is no longer visible on the Elderly site or pics of the bass for that matter ???? Congrats.

$1250 + tax. ($1325 IIRC after mi sales tax) ill see about getting some more pics up.

which i thought was good considering it was 95% original, with original covers and original hard shell case. ive seen them go for much more than that in worse condition. in fact elderly has a '78 they want $1600 for in much worse condition. i played that while i was there too. im happy with mine. ill put a little into a refin, but it will increase the value and make it a solid player. its good as is, but i still think it has some more potential.

Give me a shout next time you're going up there, I get that way pretty often, myself...

will do. it was kind of an impromptu visit.

I bought a 73 p bass 2 years ago and I love mine, good score bro.

thanks! im excited to bring her home!

I bought a 1970 about 5 mos. ago. I was a little nervous buying without playing, but, it is an absolutely awesome sounding and playing bass. I couldn't be happier. Alder/rosewood, btw:

nice looking bass. once i get mine, i will make the official call for the refin color. im going to check mine out and see what the original color may have been.

Congrats on what appears to be a fine bass! I love my 74 P, although it isn't my main player because of the typical Fender neckdive. I'm very spoiled by lightweight tuners.

i noticed a slight neck dive on this one, nothing i was uncomfortable with. i suppose i could go with some res-o-lite tuners to help solve that problem. as long as it plays well and sounds good, i can get over details like weight and neck dive. both of which can be fixed if need be.

Mine weighs in at about 8lbs even. It does suffer from neck dive, and Ive filled the control cavity with bb's which helped. I don't really want to change the tuners, as I like the all-originality of it. It doesn't really bother me...I let someone else use it for a 4 hour gig, and they said nothing about it either. It bothers some, and others less.
