PYPB XXXIII - Effects are STOOPID

EDIT: I think I'll just go with the Pedaltrain Nano.

I was leaning towards the Pedaltrain Mini because it has more room, but since I'm not in a band right now a smaller board for my basement/practices (when they happen) is fine. I'll keep my setup simple and chain it like so:
Sonic Research Turbo Tuner
W&C Phat Phuk B
Aguilar AGRO
Rat Tail

I've seen people with a Fuel Tank Jr. attached to the bottom so I might get one of those. If not, I'll chuck a Daisy Chain and something else under it.

I have a Bluebeard coming and I'm getting more and more tempted to get a Microtubes BK3. There are a few more fuzzes I'd love to try out, but right now it doesn't matter since I'm just sitting at home. As it stands I'll be able to fit two fuz pedals on the Nano (I think) with the boost. I can switch the pedals around as needed. I don't think I'll need to run a boost and three fuzz pedals!

Seeing godblender's board made me look for old pictures of my board when I had a Deep Impact. I found a couple of them as well as some of my favorite boards from year's past.

Dude I have board envy.....I'm one of those guys who didn't use a lot of effects....I just bought the Crowther Audio Prunes and Custard I tried out and loved it. You guys obviously know your **** so I will ask. Whats the significance in the chain. Why do you put a specific box in front of the other. Is there something in the sgnal chain that inhibits one effect from coming through the way you want? I have a feeling i will be posting a pic of my board here in a few months :)

There's a little bit of that. Some pedals "track" your signal such as octavers or pitch shifters and generally you want them at the beginning of your chain so they get a "clean" signal to work with. And in the case of envelope filters and compressors, you have one pedal (the filter) that is triggered by your playing dynamics and another (the compressor) that evens out your dynamics so it's hard to reliably trigger the filter. In that case, the filter should pretty much always go earlier in the chain than the compressor. Especially since the compressor can "tame" large volume spikes sometimes put out by filters.

But in general it's more about the way they interact and how they sound combined. You can find some general suggestions about what goes where in a chain but there are no hard and fast rules - just what sounds good to you.

The best thing you can do is add one pedal at a time and really play around with it and your other pedals, experimenting with where it goes in the chain.

So if you get something else to go with your Prunes & Custard (a pedal I love BTW) try the new pedal before and after the P&C to see what you like best and just have fun. I've actually discovered a lot of cool sounds by putting pedals in the "wrong" order so just experiment.

A very vague and generic answer is that some things sound better in front of (or after) other things. One starting point for ordering is...

- wah
- envelope filter
- compression
- overdrive/distortion/fuzz
- echo/delay
- modulation/pitch shifting
- level(boosters/volume pedals)
- EQ

...and the next five or so people posting after this will tell you why this is all wrong (personally, I put boosters early in my chain, as well as preamp pedals). Best way to find what sounds good to you is to try different setups and go with what sounds best to you.

For instance, I would say that you want your Pitchshifting and Overdrive/distortion/fuzz feeding into your envelope filter to get the most versatility out of it. And also because most pitch shifters work best with a clean sound before it.
