Quilter has something new on the way?

I know what you mean. An out like that on a head or preamp should be set to line level. But the way the Quilter heads work is that you set the master volume to match the cab's max rms input or below, then use the gain to get the volume you want. That makes the post-master knob DI volume less of a problem.

LOL. I've reread the user guide because of your comment, because I've been using it in the traditional way. They give contradictory instructions:

All these behaviors can be used as musical effects, or can be avoided by reducing GAIN below the limiting threshold. Once you have found the sweet spot that works for your tone, adjust the MASTER for the desired overall volume.

(this would let me think that I should adjust the gain first in order to find the right amount of "limiting effect", and then the master in order to set the overal volume)

Anyway, no matter how I set my stage volume, if the level is too hot for the PA, I have to reduce the overall amp level, making this XLR output of the BB800 unusable. I had the experience during a gig when I couldn't hear myself because of that. Horrible experience. This that day, I plug my bass into a DI box, then from the DI's through to the amp, so they could remove this XLR output as far as I'm concerned.

That cracks me up! It's almost contradictory, but not quite. I've always used it the 2nd way, treating the Master as a limit or ceiling first, but you could still do it the first way as long as your master setting isn't blowing past your speakers. I guess they didn't put too much thought into making the manual instructions clearer because so few of us read them :laugh: Good on ya though!

So do all amps work this way, master volume controlling the power output/watts of the amp?

I recognize the same power cord as for the BB800: there's a custom safety feature to prevent it from being accidentally ripped out. Instead of turning off the amp, it'll just drop it, not sure that's a big win in terms of safety :D
But you can plug in any standard power cord if you prefer (or if you lose the original).
 
And also your can plug the amp to 100V (USA) or 220V (Europe), so you can buy it anywhere and use it anywhere. Every amp should be like this, but it's not so common I think.

I thought of getting one of these to use with my BB800:
Switchcraft 303 AudioFix - Inline Audio Control Connector
There appear to be cheaper solutions if all you need is a pad.
It hasn't come up often enough for me to bother.
I did invest in a separate DI which I use from time to time. Like a tuner, I enjoy being spoiled by having it built in to the amp - but am prepared for when it's not.
(Ironically my amp with everything built in was the one too hot for this one guy's mixer.)

Yes, that's what I do in practice, I set the gain first, then the master to get the volume I want, and I use the wattage indication on the master volume knob (and my ear + common sense) to avoid damaging my cab. Except that in the case of a 8Ohm cab, I have to imagine that the master volume goes from 0 to 450 W instead of 0 to 800 W.

For example, if the master volume is at noon, it's written 160W, but if I'm using a 8 ohm cab, the max output is 450W, so noon on the master volume roughly corresponds to 90W if I'm correct…
 
No, and this is why it bugs me no end when someone with blown speakers says, "I had the Master Volume only at 5", or some such bleep.

So that makes me wonder, is Quilter really doing it?

I could see a switching system of some sort regulating power/watt output, but a master volume knob, I don't know. But there's a lot I don't know.

I remember being encouraged to explore the differences between cranking the gain / lowering the master and vice versa. Supposedly that will affect how much you hear the limiter.
In practice, I set the gain for the bass and the master for the room. 9 o'clock for cocktail jazz, noon to rock out a big dance floor and all the way up to blow woofers & get fired.
Same as my other 800 watt class D amp. ;)
 
Flat/scoop switch looks good solution, similar to recent Markbass amps where variable filter knob is replaced with switch. Scoop would be the character of the amp and flat for external preamp use or to have uncoloured response.

I'm sorry to have missed out on the original BB800. The new amp, with its brushed silver and stylized fonts looks great.
