In the early 2000's, a guitarist with a well known southern rock band contcted me about repairing his custom shop Les Paul. The neck had been broken at the headstock while in the hands of an Airline, they were paying so I charge them out the (a lot).
When it arrived, the UPS guy walked in and handed me a Gibson guitar case with a label on it. It wasn't even locked. What made it even better was all the stuff he left in the case with it.

Roadworn? Some folks pay a premium for that.
When there was a discussion about mono cases, I did not tell about me forgetting my bass falling out my truck at about 30 mph. I had boxes on the truck and absent mindedly laid it on boxes drove off and made a fast right turn and it flew off. Mono gig bags are really good.
it survived with no damage?..that bass better get played alot!
My Dean Stylist [hollow body] was shipped from Texas in it's hardshell case inside a very loose fitting cardboard box. To make matters worse, the hardshell case latches at the neck were open and the neck was laying out exposed.
But somehow it survived the trip w/ no damage and it still plays great today.

I thought Sire was bad but that's just ridiculous! A couple months ago I purchased a U5 directly from Sire in CA. I was eagerly awaiting its arrival. When it did, my wife said there's something wrong with the box. I asked if it was ruined on the outside, and "no." She said the guitar is moving around inside the box. Sure enough! Sire put the guitar box into the shipping box, taped it up and called it good to go. I was sure there would be damage bouncing around in a box from CA to PA, about a week long travel. The U5 was fine but I'll never buy another directly from Sire.
I once received a bass, from a buyer, no case, gig bag , or anything, inside a cardboard box.. literally just the bass, no packing material,

if the ax arrives with no damage = doesn't make much difference what the packing looks like.

Earlier this year, I received a bass direct from G&L just like that. It was off their "seconds" pile and no returns, so they don't give a $#!t.
maybe it's a tactic, the carrier will be extra careful out of sheer pity for the receiver.
Ouch! I got a V5R and P5 delivered direct about a month ago. Double boxed, apocalypse packed. Took about 8 days from purchase to reception. P5 is great. V5R needs a fret job. That's my only complaint.
Recently I commented that I have never had any problems buying basses or guitars on Reverb because my one rule is only buy through a dealer that happens to have a Reverb outlet. I’ll buy accessories from an individual but never a bass. I said the reason is they have all the proper packaging materials and shipper’s insurance and their employees know how to package for the brutality of carriers.
I was thrashed for that position. But I’ve never received a bass like that.

I thought that I had the worst experience. Luckily, the seller shipped mat bass in a Gator case (gig bag) which was ultra sturdy and rigid. It only had some tape wrapped around the neck, not that the zippers were going to come undone. I didn't know it was going to look like that until it arrived. So yeah, the OP is the worst shipping I've ever seen.
You bought a bass, paid for it to be delivered safely and it was. It's not how I would have shipped it, but they technically fulfilled their end. Maybe we're the idiots spending $30-40 on packing material.
