R Basses

bryanonbass said:
anyone got a 4 string R-bass that they would be interested in trading for my R-bass 5 string singlecut?

I have a possible trade deal happening, but just want to keep options open if this one fails to happen

No offence bryanonbass, but you already posted a pic in this/my thread offering it for sale, but then you deleated your post and reposted again.
Umm......dude, go ahead and make the offer like you did, but don't dump your first post and re-post to bump the thread up.
Thats what for sale section is for.

I know the thread is called "R Basses" and all......:eyebrow:

BTW, thats a nice bass you have.
If yours is anything like th one I have now, it should be sweet.

sorry didn't mean to offend. I did it not to bump the thread up, but because my post was the last on a page and immediately someone else posted, so I wanted my post to be on the current page, so people would see it.
But just to clarify, I did not offer it for sale here. I only offered it as a trade and wanted the post to be seen by other R-bass users/fans.

Again, I didn't mean to offend

Just got the R Bass that started this thread from Mike (he's been a pleasure to deal with).

Its a beauty. Im surprise by the sound...didnt think a passive instrument would sound this way.

Ditto here Rich.
You have been perfect to deal with.

Ok, so I am going to post a couple of pics that Ray has sent me, these are obviously either not quite complete, or just completed. And as a side note, I am NOT an R bass dealer or anything of the sort, just dealt with Ray a bit and love his work, so contacting me about these basses will yield about the same splurb as what you just read. That said, I don't think anyone has seen these pics yet.

Well, to be fair, did he not receive a lot of flack for intial singlecut designs, wherever they came from?

Of coarse...and I appreciate that he's moved further away from the Fodera look a likes. I'm just saying really that I personally loved the last batch asthetically speaking much more than these newer one's. I really though that he was on to something. He hasn't seemed to settled on a design yet.

You know, you really have a serious keen eye ;)

Ok, the 6 string siinglecut is his bass, so I don't think that thing is completely recent. The 4 string singlecut (the sc buckeye) that is being built, very recent. And you did comment earlier about the 4 sc shape, except how you wish the upper horn went to the 12th fret, well I guess maybe a drawback of 'fully handmade'? cause this one does go to the 12th fret (I'll attach the bass in question). further more, he told me that these are basses he has been 'trying to work on' for a bit, and I fully know that he has had bodies laying around for some time and probably waiting on parts or whatever, so these very well may be a hodge podge of shapes. The 4 string sc being built, that was the latest I had seen, per linked pic. that one was last year I think.

The 6 string sc looks just like the 5 string shedua I got aobut 2 years ago. Not sure which one you dig/dug, but yeah you're right.

I still consider Ray as far as building my next 6 string but I've just heard some bad stories from folks with enough experience to know that his basses can be a gamble. Care to comment lamarjones? I know you've had as much or more experience with Ray's work as anyone.

Electronics wise, the pickups and pres tend to be the flavor of the day, I can see that. My least favorite combo was the Nordy dual coils with the east pre, but one of my faves was the nordy single coils through the east pre. Also, those 6 string all blond double cuts that are real gas inducing, those were dual coils and east pre, and jeez they sounded so sweet, WAY up there for me. And frankly, the dual coils do best either passive or very slightly eq'ed, at least for me. My haz lab and bart setup is sick, unbelievable finger tone. The current audere and jazz pup setup is great too, but as we can all see, they switch up quite a bit. He will tell you though, passive is his fave.

As far as playability, there was a period for a little bit where I thought the necks were a little thicker than usual, but I don't think that lasted very long. (3-4 years ago?) All the necks lately, and ironically early on, seem really fast. Somewhat slim and wide, definitely not for the p bass fan imo. And, as far as tone on the basses themselves, there is a wide variety of woods being used (whereas an F is pretty much gonna be an ash body), but even with that I think ash, alder, and either regular or white mahogany is what he uses, and they all seem to sound really strong. So you are gonna have some basses that aren't sonically what some are looking for, but very well might work with others. Even within that variation though, he definitely manages to keep them in a certain realm that he feels best, he definitely has preferences that way.

Personally, I would buy one that he has built instead of commissioning one from ground up, I can't say that I think the delivery times are consistent from what I have heard. I haven't heard of anyone not getting their bass, but it can definitely take some time.

I also think that is where he does his best work, just building a solid bass within a certain realm, cause if you look at the stuff he uses, there is a lot of reusing same woods (tops bodies and all) so it seems he has particular things he likes. Most of the basses that I have played from him where he just 'has one that he was warking on' have really floored me. I can't say I've played a single dog though. Some of the thicker necks, sounded great, not my thing (I definitely talked with some that did like that thickness) but still played great. Actually, I have a bass on order with him, and it intentionally has some vague specs except for a piece of walnut I gave him. I'll try and be unbiased when I get it ;)

Honestly, I would just love to hear real opinions positive and negative about the playability on different ones, cause for real I think he went through some expirementation trying to find a space for himself in all of this. Can't argue with keeping it real. this is just what I have experienced, and live a ways from PR! (which, a lot of stuff with him happens there)

Thanks for such a detailed post, I really appreciate the time that you took to do that. A couple of the complaints I heard were based around something not being right with the basses and Ray just didn't stand by them. Of coarse, I've only heard the one side of that one so you truthfully never know.

You have made it pretty clear to me that I should look elsewhere honestly though. I'd need a very specific bass and it would have to be something that was created from the ground up for me. Sounds like Ray is not the first choice for such a bass. I did get to try a couple of his earlier basses and they were wonderful. He certainly makes a great instrument from what I can tell.

I would love to see him settle on some things like body shapes/pickups/electronics. I think it would benefit him...but who knows. There are a lot of guys out there that do the mix and match that that seems to work for.

I would have to say past a certain point, you probably would be better of wtih Stambaugh or something. Best results I have seen so far are either his own creations, or mosty his creation with a specifc top in a couple of shades of scale lengths. Those beasts are why people go back for seconds.

Leo, any idea what the Mc Keen preamp is that Ray has listed for the 6 string double cut he has available? It's a great looking bass.

No idea, is that what you mean by all over the place with electronics? :smug: I aksed about it, he really digs it and says its kinda cross from east and audere, but no idea what that means. I should try and find out....
