I just saw the news myself. Rush, Geddy, Neil, and Alex, were basically my heroes as a teenager. I've lost something about myself with this particular passing.
If he had held on until Sunday he would have died 20-1-12.

Yeah I heard a few minutes ago. A lot of us wouldn’t be in this community if it wasn’t for him and his music. A true giant, may he Rest In Peace.

I'm not much for idolizing celebrities, especially as I've gotten older and learned a lot about people in general, but these guys have always held themselves up to a high standard to my knowledge. I hope there are drums where he's going.
When I first listened to Rush, it was like going from seeing everything in black and white to seeing everything in colour. I knew I wanted to play music, and at first I wanted to play drums.

Wow is my reaction as well...we all know he was a private person, guessing only his bandmates and some close people knew. As stated, he's with his wife and daughter, it's our loss (does he have other children? Google time)
Rush was a big part of my early music development and concert-going start (saw them from Farewell To Kings up to Power Windows tours).

Edit- he did remarry, leaves behind 2nd wife and approx 10 year old daughter (condolences...so sad)

It's like losing that one teacher that you really, really loved. I learned to play drums by trying to play like Neil. Years of that lead me to the bass. Geddy and Neil were an incredibly fun rhythm section. I imagine that even though the sticks are down, his influence will live on.
