R.I.P. Scott Weiland

Not shocking, but still sad.

STP wasn't quite the soundtrack of my youth, but was the soundtrack of the loss of my youth. "Plush" was on the radio just as I graduated from college and moved to a new city to start life on my own, and about 18 months later I went to an STP concert in Salt Lake City with a few members of a team I was on working in that city. I had a 1993 Ford Probe GT in the early 90s; it was an awesome car and I remember many a very loud STP jam going on in that car.

Thanks for sharing your story, huge bummer today. STP and VR all day!

This caught me off guard. STP one of my favorite bands, since Core. You can't live the way he did without it catching up to you at some point. Was really hoping he could get the drug thing under control.
I think we were all pulling for him (except his dealer(s), of course). Dude had an amazing voice that was similar to others from the same time, but different enough to know it was him. The later albums showed a huge change in style that I wasn't a big fan of at first, but it grew on me.

I think he belongs on the list of greatest vocalists of all time. Highly influenced by the Doors and the Beatles. I have every STP CD. I lived with the Purple CD in my car for 3 months. He was at his best then.

Well that sucks. I caught them on their reunion tour a few years back. I always liked their music but I figured they'd put on a boring rock show and just pummel through the hits. Boy was I wrong. They had a killer lighting and screen setup and they put on a friggin' amazing show, they nailed it megaphone and all. I saw Scott with V n' R way back and they weren't even in the same league.

R.I.P Scott.

Yes. Although they denied it at the time, the music on "Core" and much of "Purple" was engineered to sound like grunge was supposed to sound at that moment, including the way Weiland used his voice. I'm not sure he was emulating Eddie Vedder as people said then, because he might not have heard Eddie Vedder yet when they were writing that stuff - but no doubt there were a bunch of guys singing from back of their throats in the 90s.

As STP moved on, you could tell they started to become more of what they were, and I absolutely heard more Doors and Beatles from the band overall and Weiland in particular on every successive album. And I thought it was better, actually. The 2010 album is really, really good.

Bummer for sure, but not entirely unexpected. One can't continue to literally "party like a rock star" indefinitely. There are no old junkies, Keith Richards and William S. Burrows are the exception, not the rule. I've planted way too many friends over the years and for some, you can almost hear the clock ticking. So sad for all involved.

Sucks. My friend who was leading a similar lifestyle is currently in a coma and he's probably gonna get unplugged on Sunday.

I'm sorry you're having such a personal experience of this.

I wasn't a huge STP, but definitely was tuned into and dug what they were doing. It's always sad to see talented artists leave us at such a young age.

RIP

it's really sad, because scott and some of the guys i know were/are regulars in the LA rehab scene and you're kinda watching them from afar knowing their sick and it's not working
