R.I.P. Scott Weiland

I was fortunate enough to see STP open for RHCP back in 2000. They played an awesome show.

Be at peace, Scott.

EDIT: Now that I think about it there is more to the story.

My friend (large guy, about 300lbs) and I had general admission floor seats. He told me to put my hands on his shoulders. I did do and he pretty much walked/plowed through the crowd until we were about 15 yards from the stage.

I remembered wondering if STP was going to play "Crackerman". It's a less popular song that I like. Well, that happened to be the opening song.

Also, they were wearing suits and cowboy hats, lol.

Anyway, they played a great show and then we were treated to RHCP. We were on the same side of the stage as Flea! IIRC his outfit consisted of whitey tighty underwear and a blue modulus.

After another awesome performance, I believe it was STP, wearing their suits and pig masks, who ran out on stage spraying silly string on RHCP.

Chad and Anthony looked angry. Chad trashed his drum kit. Anthony said "thank you Seattle", threw down his mic, and stormed off stage.

Flea and John just kind of shrugged and did an awesome guitar and bass jam for another 5 min before going backstage. I wish I had a recording of it.

Yes. Although they denied it at the time, the music on "Core" and much of "Purple" was engineered to sound like grunge was supposed to sound at that moment, including the way Weiland used his voice. I'm not sure he was emulating Eddie Vedder as people said then, because he might not have heard Eddie Vedder yet when they were writing that stuff - but no doubt there were a bunch of guys singing from back of their throats in the 90s.

As STP moved on, you could tell they started to become more of what they were, and I absolutely heard more Doors and Beatles from the band overall and Weiland in particular on every successive album. And I thought it was better, actually. The 2010 album is really, really good.

See while I agree with you...I've actually heard from somewhere (don't ask where....no idea) and I think I hear it...I hear a lot of LZ in STP, and not just because they did Dancing Days lol. Semi underrated band with great rhythm section and heavy rock with a great front man.

Anyone else?

One of my favorite rock vocalists and frontmen of all time. Not the first time his lifestyle caught up with him, but it will be the last. RIP

He was an amazing front man - when STP got big he got into all the moves and all the glam and all the shtick but he backed it all up with that voice - so it worked for me, even though I usually don't like somebody that's so over the top. Not many can pull that off.

The Rolling Rock concert is one of the best examples of what rock music is really all about - I've watched it 100 times and it's always great - all of them. As a band, they are vastly under-rated as musicians.

I'm posting my favorite STP video.
Rest buddy, that fight is over, addiction is hell.

"the roller coaster ride's a lonely one,
I'd pay a ransom note to stop it from
steaming"

Thanks for posting this. One of my favorite STP songs. So Beatlesque, especially DeLeo's McCartney-like bass line. And so introspective. "I was a superman, but looks are deceiving."

It's shame that so many artists are finally overtaken by the demons that fuel their artistry.
