Rant: Phrases that burn you up!

"Net net", "vis-a vis", "sweetspot" and my newest current favorite.... let me "reach out" to him/her.:spit::D

All in the context of a business discussion of course!

Holy crap, I hate "reach out". It seems like all of a sudden in the last few months EVERYONE uses that phrase.

I don't get "I could care less" when someone means "I could NOT care less.". I always hated that one, too.

"horrible"--OK, it's not a phrase, merely a word. But gawd, does it get overused on the 'Net. A lot of drama queens can never say something is merely subpar or bad in a review or comment online, they're afraid that might not draw enough attention. So everything they dislike is *drawing hand to mouth* horrible! :bawl:

Just check out user reviews for any restaurant. No matter how good the establishment, there's always at least one person who had "horrible" service or food. It even happens on TB.:eyebrow: "I took the bass of the wall at GC, but the setup turned out to be horrible"--oh, the agony you must have suffered, you should consult a lawyer!

"It's not like it's that hard" - I can't stand when people say this when they have no clue what they are talking about, or "Don't worry about it" whenever you question something that has been said, the most UNsatisfying answer ever. It just pisses me off.

Even worse: "It is what it is". Often used by the speaker to gloss over some screwup of theirs that makes someone else's life or job more difficult.

I hate the self-important talking heads on TV when they decide to count instead of properly giving a range when discussing a subject..(e.g.) "well, tonight's storm could give us as much as 10, 20, 30 even 40 inches of rain!" Duhhh.. they gotta show everyone that they can use sequencial numbers??

Another one that I find so irritating is: "I'm not comfortable with..." whatever, whatever they are not "comfortable" with.. PLEASE people, find a newer, better phrase.. that one has been run-into-the-ground so badly...

Where do you live? The Amazon?? Or do you just have a weatherman who rolls joints before they roll the camera?
:smug: Ha ha ha!! Good eye!.. no, .. no "Amazon-like" conditions here... but I do wish that it would even rain a LITTLE bit locally thou.. I suppose I used that extreme example of "counting" due to the fact that I literally can't remember the last rain-fall we had here in Anaheim.

I'll admit to still having a problem with "awesome". It's pretty well established now as a hyperbolic term of approval, but as I recall nobody was using it before the mid-70's, when it started appearing in music journalism in reference to certain "progressive" rock gods of the time. It was as if the hacks had run out of superlatives and had to resort to religious language. It's been current since about 1980, I guess, perhaps because of the exposure it got in some popular "slacker" comedies.
