Derek you should go to progressively finer grits you can start with 600-800 -1000-1500-2000 but make sure you wet sand for the 360 that I'm doing I use a small bowl of water with a drop of dawn dish soap I use the blue stuff that's the original one and make sure To keep the paper wet and check it for buildup because that will add scratches but make sure you get all of the scratches out from the previous grit before you apply your new coat of paint and every time you'll see it getting better don't worry if you sand through to the wood you have enough time to build it back up plus lacquer is a very forgiving paint.
