Derek you should go to progressively finer grits you can start with 600-800 -1000-1500-2000 but make sure you wet sand for the 360 that I'm doing I use a small bowl of water with a drop of dawn dish soap I use the blue stuff that's the original one and make sure To keep the paper wet and check it for buildup because that will add scratches but make sure you get all of the scratches out from the previous grit before you apply your new coat of paint and every time you'll see it getting better don't worry if you sand through to the wood you have enough time to build it back up plus lacquer is a very forgiving paint.

I think I actually wet sanded with 800 and soapy water.
Turned out fine, smooth as silk.
Now, that was just a headstock, with a body is likely be a little pickier.

Squier P I picked up for $90 in a pawn shop. I don't have pictures of it before but it was a cream color. I gutted it and put new pickups, pots, wiring, etc. in it. I also popped out the frets and got a new bridge. Tuning pegs will come later and maybe a new pickguard. Anyway I didn't really like the color anymore and figured a refinish could go on my list of modifications to it. I chose a cherry red and like it way better now.
When I restore cars I do the same thing with them I even get the primer so smooth it shines like the paint would( I do that so I can see all of the defects early on
Nice - I'm refinishing a B C Rich right now (the black one in my profile pic) in white and was planning on doing the headstock as well (although still debating about doing the whole neck in white - minus the fretboard).

Hi all. I'm here because I want to repaint my black OLP MM3 5 string bass blue. The body and the headstock. Lots of good advice here so I hope I can get it right the first time.

A coat of primer and two coats color so far. I'm diggin how it came out so far. Another coat or two of paint, then at least 3 coats of clear!
This is after 3 coats of paint. No sanding as of yet. It looks so good already. I'll be doing another coat
