Rattle Can Refinish Club

Loving this thread. Does anyone have any tips on how to get a finish with a texture like Nash Guitars? It's definitely not glossy, and it's not completely matte (I don't think?). My guess right now is a certain type of clear coat, or just really thin clear coat, or maybe none at all? Thanks!

How did that Lime Ice work out for you? I am thinking about using it on a VM Jazz. Thanks!

I am halfway through the paint on my Ibanez RB850RV ressue project. I used Reranch Royal Crown Purple which is close to the Royal Violet which was the original color.
I have sprayed most of the clear and will wet sand the high spots this weekend. Then its hitting it with the remaining clear and letting it cure for an additional 2 weeks before final wet sand, polish and buff.
I use Minwax Rattle can Clear Gloss Lacquer for the clear coat.

Advice needed.
I just purchased a used OLP MM3 with some dings, chips, scratches... and I'm contemplating a rattle-can refinish but could use some advice. Looking for recommendations/advice from experienced rattle-canners as to how far to strip, how to fill imperfections and what paint to use. I'd like a decent looking Metal-flake and was considering at some Rustoleum silver glitter. Any advice from people who have been there? :)

It was/is a Squier VM 3 burst with the (pepperoni) torn pick guard.

I used Testors Lime Ice lacquer for the body- three coats and then two coats of clear.

I suppose I could have shined it up a bit more but I really like the way it came out.

Nice! I was just looking at that lime ice paint the other day. Looks good. Were you able to get three coats out of one small can?

If you are considering using any Rustoleum products, use all Rustoleum products and don't mix with any other brands. Rustoleum just does not play nice with anything else. I used a Rustoleum primer under a Dupli-Color gloss black and got a finish that looked like alligator skin. Sanded back to try again and used Dupli-color primer but must have missed some Rustoleum because the primer wrinkled again in a few spots andI had to sand back and start over a third time. It wasn't until I totally removed all of the Rustoleum that I got a good finish with the Dupli-color.

Has anybody tried Varathane water based clearcoat over Rustoleum? To my knowledge, nobody makes a rattlecan water based primer, color, and clearcoat that are compatible. Varathane is a division of Rustoleum, and supposedly can be applied over traditional oil based color coat, but I haven't tried it.

Yes. I think you can apply a poly finish that will allow the same resonance but most factory poly finishes are applied so thickly that it kills the resonance in the body. Many dispute this but my experience is the same as yours.

I forgot to post this in here. It's my 1984 Ibanez RB850. I bought this as a total basket case, literally had chunks of wood missing from it. It was originally Royal Violet. It refinished it in Reranch Royal Crown Purple and cleared with Min wax Clear Gloss Lacquer. Have a few details to finish up on it and a couple of spots I am going to have to touch up. But it came out great.

That looks great! I'm about to start a refinish on a spare Squier VM Jaguar SS for my wife's birthday, and have been trying to decide between the ReRanch Crown Royal and locally available Testor's purple. How did you find the Crown Royal to work? Do you think the Minwax is just as good as the Reranch clear?
