She uses all kinds of excuses to justify what she does. Her supporters, who have no clue how a business works (and so do a lot of her detractors unfortunately) enable her by coming up with their own excuses.

If you think her situation is ridiculous, look no further than the SGD thread on Talkbass where some people were polluting threads and getting them shut down so they could support David until the very end.

People like Devi, Burgess at T1M, David at SGD always find ways to get money coming in and find ways to get supporters to somehow stay in business.

During her "Golden Age", Moog carried her stuff. You could go down there, have them all lined up, try them all out, and they all sounded like the same noisy, lo-fi mess. They ended up clearing out the whole stock for like 30$/unit.

That's right. Good deeds are good, and bad deeds are bad, no matter the identity of the person doing them. I have long thought that this was the point: freedom, equality, agency, self-identity, etc. all bear the burden of personal responsibility. It's always interesting to see this play out in new contexts (changing definitions of gender, social station, wealth, etc.)

As for Devi Ever pedals, I only ever played a Shoe Gazer that I owned for a year or two. So much fun with bass guitar. Inside the box there was just a few bits and wires poorly soldered. It was desperately overpriced; but that pedal had real soul and sounded good.

Whenever someone demonstrates their spark of greatness to the world, then falls badly because of their own demons, it is sad to witness.

Not at all my favorite pedal builder of all time Fran Blanche of Frantone pedals is also transgendered.

I've not followed this at all. Could someone in the know summarise what's going on please?

The basics:

Devi sold her business to Dwarfcraft. Dwarfcraft did a much better job with it than she ever did and suddenly she had second thoughts. So she breaks the contract, breaks the non-compete, and decides to start making pedals again - even though the designs belong to Dwarfcraft. And somehow she is the victim.

Oh did I mention she did a Kickstarter, didn't deliver the product and never returned the money?

Wow!! I also missed all this and was wondering about this, real sad on many levels....

With all the reliable, honest companies producing top notch gear, I'm always amazed by these threads relating to nut-jobs taking money and never delivering on products that people seem to think are so much better than anything else out there. I'm not a pedal breeder (though I'd kind of like to be) so maybe there's more to it than I realize, but it seems like the fx market is thoroughly saturated with reliable companies big and small making awesome products... Why even deal with someone like this??

Exactly. There is no reason to deal with this scammer. End of story. So many good other people and builders out there, Dwarfcraft being among them. So sad to see them getting caught in this poop-storm.

IMO, it seems to me that this is the exact kind of story/info we need on forums like TB. It informs the buyer/musician. Buyer beware. Of course its a lot of drama and mud dragging, I take what I want and leave the rest. I enjoy some juicy gossip just like the next guy. I am more glad that things like this are shared in a public forum so people dont get sucked in and or ripped off by companies like hers. Sure, she may be able to build some cool stuff, but it doesnt mean a damn thing if youre not honest and forthcoming on your business front. And people have a right to know.

And youre right, there are so many awesome builders out there doing cool things and being very good business owners that offer superb customer service. Its good to know the good from the bad IMO.

Totally agree that the info needs to get out there once things head south.

My point is there seems to be kind of a weird mentality where people slowly flock to unknown builders with unproven business practices and get in line to put deposits down/crowd fund new production, etc.. As a buyer, my hard earned $$ goes to companies with at least some kind of positive reputation that can be substantiated. When I travel, I won't book a hotel, VRBO, etc. without a number of positive reviews, restaurants, same thing.

You see the same thing whatever the product is (basses, pedals, pickups)- there may be some talented builders out there, but if they have absolutely no idea how to run a business and can't demonstrate their ability to do so, I'm out. I guess when it comes to this stuff, I'll never be an early adopter or the first on the block to have the new one of a kind fuzz!
