REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-III

The DI out of the PF heads are a little noisier than the REDDI, but once you start playing, you can't hear it. I love them both...no wrong answer here because they both do excellent true-tube tone, but the REDDI is a little quieter.

I don't have a REDDI but have used the transformer balanced out of my PF50 to feed a power amp a few times. It's a cool way to get power tube distortion without getting too loud (max out the Ampeg but keep the power amp turned down). I think it's pretty quiet when used in that way (even quieter than when using it as a standalone amp even) but for recording even a little hum could be bothersome if there are a lot of quieter passages.

Studio update: The Reddi was fantastic. Used it for my clean signal with 3 basses (2 Spectors and a Dingwall). Also used it for the Moog Taurus 3 pedals. I ran a dirty signal through my Darkglass B3K into the Fender Bassman 100T (out the DI in silent recording mode, no cabs).

Hehe! Just mowed the lawn yesterday. Now that I've been working out at a gym for 10 weeks (and retired my 15-year-old mower), it's a lot easier than it used to be.

All the best with the new workout regime. Making lifestyle changes is never easy. It’s more necessary when you are in the public eye. It’s hard to stick with it but well worth it.

I really have to force myself to start every day with a good walk when there’s snow and ice on the streets. The snow is finally gone but the cold has been brutal.

As I type this I have a REDDI sitting on my desk for me to play around with later tonight and in the days to come.

I'm really looking forward to testing it out, and maybe doing some analysis and @JimmyM style comparos in the future, but until then, my curiosity is getting the better of me:

Quick question - does adjusting the level on the REDDI change the tone in any meaningful way aside from volume? I've searched on the topic and it seems that while many of the more trusted sources say no, I've found a large number of sources that say it does alter gain and harmonics.

Thoughts? Has either been 100% confirmed?

I have the same question out to the A-Design team, but I can be quite impatient sometimes. :p

I have found the front VOL control does NOT change harmonic content,At least I dont retect any.. However i mostly run mine at 12 o'clock . So I can have repeatable results without searching incase I have to come back for a recut or overdub...
,I believe the REDDI VOL knob control is after the main Transformer IIRC. So any harmonic content is possibly just imagination or the result of overdriving the input of the channel strip that follows.. This is what i found/ .Others may think differently. But Ive been using my main REDDI since 2004 or so.. Loved it so much I bought another for home studio.
My recording setup is a windows based Studio One 4 with an RME A/D interface.
I also never got the B15 likeness. To me it is is more like an API 512 preamp with huge headroom.

The real proof in the pudding comes when a REDDI is used with a Full Range Monitors with a balanced sub in studio.. There is a 3D bloom that will not be noticed as much with even the best quality headphones or IEMs, But some may notice . .To me, Its a FEEL thing . And every freq is lined up so you have less distortions within the signal. The OT is huge and does not saturate the way others may.
I had the eclair Evil Twin which is also a great DI bit it added a bit too much low end.. with a large boost down around 10 hz moving lots of air . Had to always HPF at about 15. Where the REDDI is more even down LOW and extends very deep....But not hyped

Is there a sound to the REDDI.. I have to say yes. But not like the B15 everyone claims.. Like i said earlier its more like an API mic pre to me. Tight and Big not darker like another big name mic pre

I you use a REDDI for a few weeks and get used to it in a high quality IEM rig. Try going cold turkey to another DI like a JDI or countryman etc. You will notice the difference immediately.

No, you can't slam it and turn it into a fuzzbox :D

It's been confirmed by Peter Montessi that volume only affects volume and not tone. Turning up louder affects perception of tone and harmonics positively in and of itself. But there's nothing fundamentally different about the sound itself. However, if you wish to try slamming it, throw a clean boost in front of it. And maybe an LPF or EQ to turn down the highs past 4 or 5k. I've never done it but I'd bet it sounds good. You'll run through tubes quicker but 6N1P's are cheap enough.

Ha! My goal is NOT to slam it, but rather to just be aware of some of the variables associated with the unit.

Not interested at all in it for fuzz, but rather I want to see if I can learn from some of its secrets as to why it's held in such high regard. :ninja:

The only real variable to it is adjustable level. Otherwise it's fixed at one spot and doesn't have much in the way of secrets. People just like it because it's great.
