REDDI Tube DI Mega Thread . Potential megathread that is.

Hey Fafner...oh yeah. I'd cut down to one EQ or the other and a dirt pedal, but I wouldn't use a Blues Driver. Guitar pedals never have enough low end for bass. I'm currently using a VT Deluxe, but I'm not digging it as much now that the REDDI exposes in glaring detail why it's still a simulator. It is a killer pedal, but now I want something more real that doesn't step as much on the REDDI as the VTD does.
And I would never think about putting a compressor on it! Forget that! Just enjoy how fun it is to play when you're so noticeably uncompressed. People talk about compression in tube technology...bullcrap! Run them clean and I've never felt anything more responsive to the way you play. And rather than trying to even everything out, I totally dig on that now. But if I felt I absolutely must have compression, it would have to be compression that's at this level of tone, and not a Multicomp. I'd rather do without than settle for less.
That's just me and any way you roll would be fine and still sound as awesome as your playing. But I would definitely look to stick as little in the path of the REDDI as you can. Dirt pedal's fine. An EQ's fine. Even an inexpensive comp is fine if you really really have to have one and you like it
But the less you can add to the signal line, the better off you're going to be in the long run. And it's cheaper.

Fafner I've had many of those pedals and I own the Reddi. I can say all you really need is the Linden EQ and the Reddi. The other stuff will just degrade a great tone. If you guys seriously want to compress, you need good stuff. I recommend the Effectrode PC-2A or the new Origin Effects Cali 76 with transformer option. Both of these run around $350-400 each. Depending on whether you prefer tube sound or tight SS 1176 compression. Forget the NE-1, I have one and it was cool in 1998. Not now. And if you need bass grit, Sansamp or Xotic BB. If money is tight, stick with Linden into the Reddi, and enjoy!

I connect the REDDI to the amplifier output o the 76, but the cali 76 with transformer has its own DI output.
I need a little tone shaping for a gig this coming weekend, so I picked up an Empress ParaEQ.
I'm never good with describing tones and whatnot, but this thing is perfect. You can't tell it's in the chain, but it's got a fairly powerful EQ. It really keeps the tone of your bass and the tone of the REDDI together, with some added tone shaping.
If you've ever got a need for a small external EQ, definitely check it out.

Not to worry...want more mids? Cut bass and treble and turn it up to make up for the lost level. You don't get pinpoint control but the Baxandall controls are quite musical and very hard to find a bad sound. I kind of had a hot flash when bassgod said how well the Empress works because I just ordered a Linden, but I calmed down when I realized how good the 2 knob thing works, so I won't bother cancelling

So I busted out the REDDI and VT Deluxe today trying to see if I could learn to get along with the VT as overdrive, and then I figured I'd do a listening test on here to see if folks could tell the difference between a VTD running clean and set to near flat and a REDDI with the same type of low and high end rolloffs as the VT.
Still not buying it over a tube OD or cranking the B-15 and micing, and I've spent a half hour trying to EQ the VT's gankiness out of it to be fair, and I'll tell you, it's hard to get rid of the gank. I think I got it close, but to me it's respectable for SS but still quite noticeable which is which. But I don't know...here's the tracks without telling you which is which...what do you guys think?

I hear less heft underpinning the notes. The notes themselves sound quite similar, the second clip just seems to have more body underneath each note...
Same here Greg. Track 2 just has a lot of thickness (but controlled IMO) to each note, especially the low ones in the beginning of the track. The pick attack feels a smidge "softer" on the second one as well, but that's just after one listen to each track. Not sure how the EQ is throwing my ears off, but I think track 1 reminds me of my VT. Of course, this is where Jimmy tells me I have it backwards

Jimmy, I listened to both of them twice. To me, #2 sounded a little more musical. As soon as I heard it, it reminded me of Jamerson, just the way he had that really nice OD on all those old Motown tracks. I just got a VTD myself, like JEDBass it sounded the same to me. If I'm wrong, so be it. Both sound great, #2 just a bit more.
Oh yeah. #2 is the business. I'm actually a bit stunned there's such a massive difference.

Whew - glad to know my ears weren't deceiving me! As I mentioned before, it's not that the VT (or Countryman in those earlier clips) sounded bad, but the REDDI is just that much better. Best way I could describe it is "smooth but defined with girth behind every note".
Oh, one thing I do want to mention that hopefully doesn't get lost in all this. IMO, for those that can't afford to step up to the REDDI, the VT is no slouch. Tech21 really did do a fine job, and I'd have a hard time finding something better for the money. But for me I think I may be selling off either my VT and VTD very soon (or maybe both?) and picking up the red box of magic!
