Reiner Amplification Gasoline Bass Overdrive

I spent a little quality time today dialing some sweetness. I was able to get rid of most the fuzz and get more of a overdriven tone. Very nice indeed. The Gasoline really kicks the Mesa up a level. Next, I’m going to have to try my Pork Loin into the Gasoline. Might offer more overdrive than fuzz.

Another side note, the MS60-B is only used for a tad of compression. I apologize for the messy board. Like I said, quick change out last night.

To quote @monsterthompson, the blend control is your friend. Once I tried that, the Gasoline became very useful.

This how I typically run my Gasoline...

What cab(s) are you using, and what mids/tweets are in them?

Agreed. Blend and octane controls are the key with the gain set very low.

fEARful 12/6 with Eminence 3012LF and the Alphalite mid. I have not yet tried it thru my MAS 15/6 loaded with Faital’s. The Faital’s give more of a vintage tone compared to the sterile hifi of the fEARful.

I've had a bunch of the FF stuff come through over the years, and have always felt that the mid drivers needed to be padded back another 3dB or so for proper tonal balance with the woofer. That said, the Alpha mid actually has a pretty nice profile for overdrive in the right application - much nicer sounding IMO than the 18 Sound.

Most overdrives/distortions rely to some degree on the speaker to roll off the top end. You can design a pedal with a steeper rolloff/cab sim, but IME they often end up sounding muddy though more vintage style cabs. With dirt, you don't want speaker high frequency response past the 5-6kHz mark, and it needs to be balanced with the rest of the frequency spectrum.

With the Gasoline, the Gain taper is different than a lot of pedals that go from very little overdrive to a huge jump around 12:30-1 o'clock. So you have a big sweet spot between 0830 and 1130 for overdrive; past that gets into heavier distortion. I like running Gain in the 9-10:00 range, with Blend around 1:00, Octane around 9:00. I typically run in Stoich or Lean mode. Also, Octane all the way off (CCW) is flat.

Thanks for the suggestions @JGR Much appreciated! Like I said, the Gas really brought some sweetness to the Mesa. I’m certain once the honeymoon has ended and I understand the pedal more, it will do a world of good.

I really started to get into some awesome light, punchy overdrive with the gain set around 9:00 and increasing the input gain on the Mesa. Octane and blend around 11:00 and the level around 3:00.

Sure thing. I like to drop the Blend back and crank the Level as well, especially when boosting the Octane a bit. I think a lot of folks might get thrown at first running the Gain at what might be perceived as very low, but it starts working as soon as you crack it open from fully CCW, and is pretty gradual/consistent in it's increase. If I had used a different taper pot, folks would probably be running Gain around noon or 1, but then you are back to the abrupt transition into heavy distortion/grit. I have a D800+ as well and its a wonderful amp - I typically run all the EQ flat, with the LPF and voicing off, with the deep and bright engaged, though I generally prefer the bright switch off when running dirt.

I defently brought back all the EQ points on the Mesa close to noon when adding the Gas. I have the voicing and LPF around 9:00, and like I said above, brought the input gain up to 10-11:00. I can’t recall, but I believe I had both the bright & deep switches off.

I’m a Mesa Subway user and I tend to keep my tweeters turned off in my cabs.

I saw you post you were using a 12/6. My experience with a Barefaced BB2 was that the Gasoline could get a bit brighter and sharper at certain gain settings than I had expected. I'm thinking that more traditionally voiced cabs might pair better than modern "flat" cabs (like the BB2 and 12/6) do. That said, There's quite a bit of range to this pedal, and small tweaks can go a long way. I found it worked best for me with a pick, and certain basses and strings were better than others. Obviously YMMV. It's a good pedal. I might have kept mine, but I'm neck-deep in Dunwich dirt pedals, and I've got my clipping needs covered.

Really liking this pedal! I was able to spend some more quality time tonight with her...wow, just wow. Like I stated above, it really adds some sweetness to the Mesa. I also ran it with the Model feT and with my Pork Loin. I honestly like what the Gas & Pork Loin combo has to offer. As much as I like the Model feT, I not certain I will hold on to it.

I would really consider getting one if I didn't run through an SVT. From what I can tell on demos, they have quite a nice mid range presence. I have found these types of pedals handy when using everything but a SVT.
