@WayneDupuis... I just checked the truss rod adjuster on my 2010 Ren5... it's a 9/64ths, or whatever the metric equivalent is. No guarantee yours is the same... like I say, my 2013 is different. ;)

Sounds like you're hooked. :D

I'm new to Ren 5 frettless but have been playing my acoustics through an acoustic image. They sound so much better through an acoustic amp than my yba300. The Ren with acousticore strings sounds similar through either amp. Where my Ovation with acousticores only likes the Ai. I guess I'm not liking the acousticore strings on the Ren, even though they sound terrific on my Ovation fretted acoustic (Nikki Sixx bass.) Dang...gong through the string journey yet again.

For practice, and small-room... Acoustic Image Clarus II with a BagEnd S10-D:

Occasionally I'll use that same AI amp to drive a mirrored pair of Avatar SB-126's, or a combination of the BagEnd with one of them. Most of the time though, I'm using this Mesa Walkabout/Scout 15 combo:

I really should experiment with strings some on the Renaissance basses... I'm just not at all unhappy with the AcoustiCores. Something about them gives those basses a distinctive voice that I really like. One of my local buddies is going to try a set of Pyramid Gold flats on his Ren 5 fretless soon. Maybe I'll get to try them out on his dime. :D

I use Pyramids on both of my P-basses and love them, but I think that the tension would be too high on the Ren. I found nirvana with TI flats - they were too light for my taste on the P bass, but just right on the Ren. Wonderful tone and easy to play. The AcoustiCores were too twangy and floppy for me. I should add that the TI recommendation came from Rick Turner directly.

I agree on the tension of Pyramids. I think one could adjust the neck accordingly, but those heavy tension wires in combination with the extra-long scale would probably be a non-starter for me.

I have TI Jazz Flats on both my Electrolines, and wouldn't swap them for anything... another reason why I'm not motivated to change the Renaissance basses over to the same thing.

If they weren't $115 a set, I might be more willing. :greedy:

Since getting my 1st Ren in the last century, I've been through TIs, flats and acousticores, Chromes, and Labella tapes. Currently on the white Labella copper set. My Ren deuce is a one off, 30" scale, 5 string fless with a high C..it actually started life as a fretted cello range bass a/d/g/c/f. My next steps there were to get longer scale classical strings, but ended up having the mothership in SC make it into its current confab. I didn't have a problem with the feel of the Thoms (once used to them) but wanted a more flatwound feel, Chromes way to thuddy for this instrument.

AFA amps..I usually have an amp at the gig, so..I bring my Raven preamp and a DBX GO. if I have to bring an amp, I take my GK MB200. One thing you can remember is the Ren is an amplified acoustic instrument and has all the nuance of one, so unless you are looking for the 50s/60's sound of an acoustic guitar with a de armond sound hole PU (something I like a lot, but not in this instance) it's best to have a $20 bill in your pocket to "help" the monitor mixer do his job.

Bass Strings Online has them for $80. I bought mine used in TB classifieds, they popup now and again (but usually sell fast).

I hear ya'. ;)

I've picked up a couple used sets here too, but for fretless I prefer to only buy new flats. And TI Jazz Flats really are my ideal string, but uhh... 14 basses × $80 = :eek:

So variety became attractive. :D

Time to sweep up the dusty floor, and clean out the cobwebs in the quiet-est... make that; -the most exclusive- bass thread on TalkBass!

Wow. Summer's wide open. I haven't bumped the thread in a good long while...

I did spot a couple interesting Turner basses on Reverb recently. Here's a 6-string "Deuce" bass, with a reference piezo bridge and an EL magnetic, and I assume blending electronics. Rick Turner Renaissance 6 String Custom Natural Wood

My Rens are still getting plenty of play time with our neo-oldtyme band, New River Bound. Recently our fiddler married his longtime sweetie, and we played for the ceremony, also providing music for prelude, as well as all the formal dances following. The reception afterward was a called contra dance actually. It was a very long day, and it rained just about the whole time, but we had a blast, including his stand-in. (who is quite the fiddler herself!)
