Request - ease up on the Sire advocacy

So, which model did you order?

Seriously, from what I can see this whole board is full of people who are advocating various brands. What would the response be if you started a thread entitled "Request, Ease Up on the Fender Advocacy"?

I've mentioned the Sire on a few threads, other than the Sire Club thread. So I guess I'm guilty. If someone is interested in a bass in the same price range - especially a jazz style bass, I think they should be aware that it might be a viable alternative. I don't think that's inappropriate - it's an attempt to be helpful. In at least one instance, the OP was not aware of their existence. Lots of members are here to learn about instruments they're not familiar with, myself included. Learning about reasonable alternatives helps people to make a more informed choice. In the end, people should buy whatever they feel fits their needs the best.

I read about them and ordered one after seeing the Sire Club thread repeatedly near the top of the posting list. I'm happy with mine and thankful that the numerous postings brought them to my attention.

I'm more annoyed and perplexed by threads that go off on a tangent and totally ignore the OP's interest - like a recent thread where the OP asked about fretless jazz basses and before long people were suggesting - and arguing about - various models of Fender Precisions and models that were not even available in fretless.

I think it's important to give people options they aren't aware of, and i'm willing to bet a lot of people outside of TB aren't aware of Sire. I mention squiers in threads with people asking about ibanez and yamaha entry level models, and in turn I don't get upset when people mention Ibanez and Yamaha in threads asking about squiers. keep your options open.

I would not buy one off a website. I found one in music go round once. It was the heaviest bass I have ever played. My six string Warwick Corvette weighed less.
It had a thick chunky neck, the gloss on it was sticky. I played it like 10 seconds. The weight was just a non-starter.

In the past few years I've come to realize that my playing is the same on 2k bass as it is on $500 bass. So I played a lot Yamahas, Ibbys and Squires, all good choices. I'll tell anyone to take a chance on Sire!

I attempted to qualify my thoughts in post #13. It's just the forced-fits I want to draw attention to.

I don't mind an occasional F-bomb, but Tourette Syndrome is another story.

I doubt that this is the case, but I am open to correction if someone knows better than I.

As far as I know, bholder is the only person to have received any kind of discount, which he received once for his early-and-often advocacy, on one bass purchase. Note that he was praising them strongly before getting a discount, not the other way around. That is, his advocacy was rewarded after the fact; advocacy did not stem from being given something of cash value and told "go tout these". And, I know he's ordered at least one, probably 2 more since then, and ordered them for the same price and in the same manner anyone else does.

Now, if there are any discount deals to be had, I'd like one! I aint got jack @%$#^ and I have been talking about how great my 2 are for quite some time.

But anyway, I am glad that, via this thread, we have stopped all the talking-about-Sire that is so annoying.

When that M7 comes out next month, well, all bets are off.

Pretty damn close. I think the MM pre-is a better preamp than a MIA Fender. I really haven't seen anything to suggest to me Fender hardware, etc is actually better (though undoubtedly more costly since it has "Fender" printed on it which makes a $5 part a $15 part).

If you like Fenders, that's cool, I do too. I have one. The only reason I might play my Fender Marcus Miller over the Sire is that my FMM is upgraded to Lane Poor pickups, Bartolini pre-, reverse tuners, and brass nut. To my tastes. Even so, right now, it's the Sire I pick up.

The two people who are most anti-Sire (Hopkins and GNL2000) have never owned own, and probably never played one. You might NOT like it better after playing one, which is completely fine, nothing works for everyone. But you'd seem more credible in your criticism if you has at least played one first. Jussayin'.

The OP doesn't strike me as anti-Sire, just wants to keep it to appropriate threads which makes sense to me. Now, will all the other brand advocates still keep inserting their brand recommendation into non-relevant threads too, and does that seem proper that only Sire needs to pipe down, not Squire, Fender, MusicMan, and so on? Maybe people are just genuinely enthusiastic.

Yeah, I feel ya, but I see that from every kind of owner. "Oh, you need a ((whatever bass poster plays))" is the most common thing in the TB universe, and is not limited to Sire.

There has always been a handful of nitpickers on TB that were quick to correct folks from "Squire" to "Squier." I've even joined in the reindeer games from time to time. Why don't I see the same aggression when folks have been typing "Sire" instead of "Squier?" I guess the "q" is silent nowadays. Squiers (or "Sires") are fine instruments indeed!

I wonder how many people who are calling Sire crap or comparing them to Squiers have actually played one? I have played one, and compared it to the DJ5 Skyline that I eventually bought. I honestly thought that the only things on the Sire that seemed budget to me were the tuners and the finish on the neck that does indeed remind me of a Squier VM. The preamp in the Sire is outstanding, the bridge was impressive, and the overall fit and finish was on par with a $1,500-$2,000 bass.

However, we are at the point where there appears to be a deliberate campaign to bring up Sire in every single Fender/Squier thread. Once in a while is fine. But we are far beyond once in a while. We can say that about Geezer pickups and Fenders and Squiers because those seem to be more brought up than Sire basses.
