Then they need to step up their QC as well. I am not defending Lakland or anyone else.

I was aware of Sire, but it wasn't until a few weeks ago I found out they make a fretless V7. I'm looking for a new fretless and hadn't considered this because I wasn't aware they existed. Unsure about the preamp though (I only play passive basses).

(Sire also sounds great in passive mode, with a passive tone control. In fact, last gig/1st gig with the 4-string, I wound up just using passive mode most of the night)
(You might grow to love the mid-sweep preamp).

OP, you think Sire fans are bad? I DARE you to start a thread titled "P basses don't work for me".

But.. But... They're so versatile!

The versatility of P-Basses and how Squier is "good for the price" are the ones that grind my gears.
Is it that P-Basses are exceptionally versatile or is it that they're exceptionally common? (It's that they're common.)
Is a Squier good for the price, or is it just good? (It's just good.)

Pretty damn close. I think the MM pre-is a better preamp than a MIA Fender. I really haven't seen anything to suggest to me Fender hardware, etc is actually better (though undoubtedly more costly since it has "Fender" printed on it which makes a $5 part a $15 part).

If you like Fenders, that's cool, I do too. I have one. The only reason I might play my Fender Marcus Miller over the Sire is that my FMM is upgraded to Lane Poor pickups, Bartolini pre-, reverse tuners, and brass nut. To my tastes. Even so, right now, it's the Sire I pick up.

The two people who are most anti-Sire (Hopkins and GNL2000) have never owned own, and probably never played one. You might NOT like it better after playing one, which is completely fine, nothing works for everyone. But you'd seem more credible in your criticism if you has at least played one first. Jussayin'.

The OP doesn't strike me as anti-Sire, just wants to keep it to appropriate threads which makes sense to me. Now, will all the other brand advocates still keep inserting their brand recommendation into non-relevant threads too, and does that seem proper that only Sire needs to pipe down, not Squire, Fender, MusicMan, and so on? Maybe people are just genuinely enthusiastic.

I've said absolutely nothing bad about Sire, I just expressed serious doubts that it is in competition quality wise with an MIA Fender, or that its hardware is on the same level. The fact that the string ferules look crooked on most of the pics I have seen kinda makes me doubt that even more. The tuners on the Sire look like your typical import stuff, same with the bridge but with different saddles. The preamp is probably on par with a Fender pre, but Fender preamps never impressed me to begin with.

All of which have a very high quality USA made counterpart, that the Sire basses don't have.

A Sadowsky is a Fender style bass "with a knockoff looking headstock and a logo that looks like it took 5 minutes in Wordpad" or whatever was originally said. That's all I'm saying.

Funny you should be talking about Sadowskys. A very good bassist who'd never heard of Sire thought my V-7 five string was a Sadowsky based on tone and appearance from a distance.

I'm not a big fan of Sadowsky's head stock shape either. But their logo had much more thought put into it than "Marcus Miller" printed out in a font that looks like Times New Roman

I will take your word for it, your import Sire is on par with any MIA Fender. The hardware, pickups, and fit and finish is just as good.

LoL ok fair enough, but it's still just a name written in a font. You type a name into Wordpad, you scroll through the fonts, and BAM. There it is. LoL I'm not at all a Sadowsky hater. To the contrary, I'm merely saying that passing judgement based on the headstock shape and logo is perfectly reasonable in terms of personal preference, but when used in a discussion about the quality or whatnot, I think it's silly. Because someone, somewhere, who knows nothing about a high-end bass like Sadowsky might look at it next to a Squier and immediately identify that a Squier headstock is the same as a Fender, so it must be more legit.

Big difference with the Flea bass, he was touting it as a inexpensive entry level bass, not something he was necessarily going to use himself.

If you check out the Sire website you'll see that they are pitching them as exactly that - a high quality, yet relatively inexpensive, entry level bass. It is the Sire buyers who keep comparing them to MIA Fenders, etc. I don't own any of those more expensive basses so, based on personal experience, I can't say. Those who make these claims mostly do own MIA Fenders, Lakland Skylines, etc. so I will take their word over the uninformed speculation of others.

And there are a few videos posted on the Sire Club thread where you can see Marcus Miller playing both his Fender and the Sire live at concerts.
