Off topic, but very much thread related: Tickets for the Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia (and everywhere else come to think of it!) Bass Get-Together (DMVBass) are now on sale!
Special guests on the night with be the one and only Jens Ritter and taking our performance clinic will be Aram Bedrosian, Ritter endorser, teacher, composer and performer.
I've talked to Jens about reaching out to Ritter owners near and far and making this a bit of an owners event too, so if you're not doing anything on June 26th then think about coming along! This will be Jens only US trip for the remainder of 2011. It's also a chance to have some time with him in a very relaxed environment and ask him that question that you've always wanted to ask!
We usually get between 40 and 50 folks at our event so there is also always a great selection of basses and rigs, etc. to try out. We're planning on doing some mini-clinics as well as a jam with a 'house' band at the end of the night. We also have a great door prize raffle. Again, this time around we've got some great prizes to giveaway, including a Custom Super J bass being especially built for the event. Oh, and did I mention pizza and soda?

I was wondering... What do you guys use regarding amps and cabs? I've been wanting to try new stuff, but they are hard to find here in Brazil. Right now, I'm playing with a Mark Bass rig. I'm into a modern sound, with boosted treble and bass.
Any of you guys playing Phil Jones? I really want to know if Ritters sound good with them!
Let me know what you use and what sort of tone you were after when you purchased you amp!!

Yup. Ritter + Phil Jones = modern sound. Didn't know what I was in for when I bought the PJB rig, I had never seen or heard one before I received mine. All kinds of info over on the PJB thread.

I'm running mine through a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0, Uber 8812 and Uber 210.
Sound-wise, again it's pretty modern - there's maybe a theme developing there! It certainly cuts through. Low Bs are phenomenal!

I use my German Merlin stack, which put a total end to my amp GAS when I bought it back in 2003. It's extreme Hi-Fi, stupidly expensive, and is unfortunately not made anymore. Hope mine never dies...!
I haven't tried PJ or Genz Benz, but another great sounding amp for a Ritter is an Aguilar DB750, I think.

I chose Hevos speakers because they don't "color" the sound. You hear exactly what's coming out of the amp.
They're very lightweight (my back likes that) but still have an enormous sound.

When I started, I played a lot of rock and metal. So SWR seemed like a good choice. They're actually good in any genre. But too heavy.
I still use the amp. I like the sound and I still use the on-board effects.
And.... why use wood, paint, lacker... if you can use fabric

Ehm... you tell me?? I haven't been to Jens' shop or talked amps with him, but the Merlin is really rare - though maybe not in Germany
I'd better ask him next time I talk to him.
And by the way, that is one crazy fabric-wrapped bass he's put out this time...! 7 strings, fretless, back mounted controls... and psychedelic fabric body cover ! Man, is there any coating to protect the fabric on there? Otherwise I'd be afraid to wear it thin...
I'm guessing there aren't many Merlin amp models. Certainly not passive ones. 
I think Jens said there were only 25 amps made.

I had no idea the number of Merlin amps was so low...! Actually, I tried to order another cab from the guy who made them, but he couldn't figure out how to handle the VAT and then stopped replying to my e-mails... didn't REALLY need it, anyway 
And yes, it is a passive amp, which is very cool. All pots are cut only, with normal volume at 10. I have a lousy pic of my stack here:

rollerberg2000, do you have any sound samples recorded with the PJB?? I also once bought a PJB blind folded, and at that time I was playing Alembics and they sounded awesome. But I started playing Status basses, and they didn't sound that great through the PJB, so I sold it.
I guess it is time to buy it again...!

Sorry Greg, I don't have any sound samples. What was it that changed from the Alembic to the Status that made you ditch the PJB?
Well, it turns out that Jens indeed has a Merlin amp - and he knows the guys who developed and built them. Pretty cool
Maybe he could help me get that extra cab some day, then?

Can't wait to see the finished bass.
With the Alembic, I had a very nice, natural wood sound, very organic and clean. A very tight and punchy bass, with an ultra clean low end. One of the best (if not the best) I've ever heard, quite honestly.
Due to the Status I have being made fully out of carbon fiber, they naturally have a much more hi fi sound, and for me, back then, it lacked a bit of that wood tone.
Now, I've developed a sound that is much more hi fi than organic, so I'm looking back to the PJBs, for the Ritter (when I'm playing some classic rock and Blues), and for the Status, that I use for my own modern sound records.
I'm guessing the Ritters will sound pretty much like the Alembics... Full and clean!
I think I'll get the Roadcase BG-800 for a starter, and hopefully, a setup like yours in the future!!
