Road Worn P - Faux Cigarette Burn

Odd, the bass sounds and plays EXACTLY the same. Apparently the fake cigarette burn DOES NOT, I repeat DOES NOT effect tone or playability.

When I was relicing a bass I found out that today's cigarettes have anti smoldering chemicals added.

For flavour, I assume?

Just Googled this bass... they all have a cigarette burn in the same spot... interesting that they all got burned that way!

They only do the cigarette burn in MIM basses because it is against U.S. labor laws to compel a worker to smoke.
No such laws impede production at the Ensenada Fender plant, where all those burns are done by this one somewhat infamous child laborer:

I would be inclined to do the same if I had that model - which is an excellent Precision - if only to avoid having to explain the mark to the uninitiated for years to come.

I'd do the exact same thing as you if I got a Roadworn P. While road wear is really cool if it's done over time and legitimately, I dislike basses that come with it pre-done, and that cigarette burn is just the cherry on top for me.

No hate though, they're beautiful basses, just not my style

I think the tobacco lobbyists are hearing you loud and clear. I think it's interesting that the "burn" goes that deep into the wood...wonder how they do it? Do you think they just have a row of RW necks in the Fender employee break area and instead of flicking it in the ashtray, Debbie from accounting just leaves it burning on the headstock? Or perhaps they do it with a soldering iron?

The ones burned by Debbie from Accounting have the mojo. They're going to fetch a premium on Ebay in a few years.

i bought this most excellent Heavy Relic pbass last year. here's a shot of the scars it received by hanging in a small shop since '08. i removed the fuzzy material from the finish by rubbing lightly with a teflon pad, but the chemical burn is staying. it's a reminder of sorts, lol.

If I ever did buy a roadworn bass, I'd probably go nuts on it, causing so much more wear that you wouldn't even know the original "roadwear."
