Roadtripping to Austin, TX next week...

Ya, the Round Rock Salt Lick, like their old location on 360, isn't very good.

That's putting it lightly. The only ribs I've had that were worse were salted to hell and back. Imagine you like a nice rare steak. Now imagine getting rare ribs that you have to fight to get the meat off the bones. That's their ribs. They don't taste like they use a rub either so it's fighting tough, bland meat. Every other BBQ place (that I've tried) is Austin is better, and Mueller's in Taylor is the best I've had (*their sauce bites but you won't need it, rub is great and they're cooked to perfection, as are their chicken, turkey, sausage, and brisket).

If you get hungry on the drive up/down I35, check out the Czech Stop in West, Texas (the town that had the horrific plant explosion a few months ago). The Czech stop is in a big gas station right off the highway, but the kolaches are famously good.

Yes, yes, yes. Whenever to you to or from Dallas, ALWAYS stop in West for kolaches.

I was there for a week last year and ate at Taquerias Arandinas EVERY day, sometimes twice a day. Very authentic, GREAT food at a very low price point. The customers were mostly Mexican which says a lot about the food authenticity. This is not a tourist type place. I spoke with the owner and told her it was the best Mexican I have ever had. I would highly recommend it for lunch (everyday). Hope you enjoy it!

for greasy burgers, sandy's has good food and a neat vibe. also, dan's/fran's can be enjoyable. workers' food.

you didn't ask, but on s.p.i. i always like to stop at the south padre island brewing company. ask the waiter what's freshest. also, daddy's is very good. go to clayton's to be in with the in crowd. go to boomerang billy's for vibe. go to blackbeard's for tradition padre style.
