Roscoe Club

i found an older for sale ad of this same bass that says this:

According to Keith (Roscoe), based on the serial # 3184, it is a 1990.
The Neck is Maple/Purpleheart/Maple with Walnut Streamers.
Inlays are Abalone/Onyx
24 Frets
The Body has a Beautiful Maple Top and Sunburst Gloss Finish.
Bartolini Pick-Ups
Wilkinson Bridge
Sperzel Locking Tuners
Controls are....Volume...Bass...Mid...Treble...PU Blend
There is a Mid control on the backplate,
and Dip Switches inside control cavity for enhanced tonal flexibility.

anyone ever heard of electronics like this?

The ad doesn’t really specify what brand preamp is installed. The statement “a mid control on the backplate” could be a mid control but it could actually be the trim pot for a Bartolini preamp (but I don’t remember seeing dip switches being included on any Bartolini preamp). I have seen them with EMG preamps. Maybe it’s an EMG preamp.

I’d say just remove the rear access cover when the bass arrives and you should be able to identify what kind of preamp is installed.

I was talking with @JOME77 about this the other day but thought I'd share it here too. I've always had a stigma against the Auguilar OBP-3 preamp because I've never seemed to gel with one in any bass I've had. It's not that it sounds terrible, just not my preference compared to the many other preamp options these days. And I've always felt like the EQ stack is way too sensitive, meaning turning the dials just a little can result in too much boost/cut. In Roscoe basses I've had Bartolini, Demeter, Nordstrand and even Audere. I recently picked up a Roscoe with an OBP-3 preamp and Roscoe Barts. I fully intended on swapping out the preamp but I'm really surprised at how much I like what I hear. I don't know what it is, but the combination of the OBP-3 with Roscoe Bart soaps sounds really good to my ear. I think I'd describe it is as more open/less compressed sounding than the Bart preamp. I don't really need to boost the lows or highs at all.... just use the Mids dial almost like a tone control. The OPB-3 is quieter than Bartolini preamps too. Have you noticed how the Bart seem to react more to being too close to a preamp/amp with static? I don't think I'm going to swap the preamp after all. I'll enjoy this one as is for now.

I’ve been playing my basses with flats installed lately (due to the set list) and next weeks set list is perfect for my fretted Roscoe (with rounds) so I took it out of the case and started going over the songs and was instantly reminded of how good the Aguilar preamp sounds in that bass! Such a nice warm and growly tone!
Every time I pull it out to play it I think maybe it’s time to drop in the Nordstrand preamp but as soon as I hear it I’m smiling. I guess that the Nordstrand preamp is just fine in the box.:)

Still waiting on the Dunlop flats to arrive to try on my Century 5. The set for the Classic P are on the way, but I already have TI flats on that so not as anxious for those as the 5 string set. Never done a flat 5 set.

My Roscoe SKB, Warwick Corvette & Birdsong HY5 fivers all have flats. Love them. The HY5 (31.5' scale) has a double through body on the B string.

Still the prettiest Roscoe ever made, IMO

...and now one of relatively very few Roscoes in Australia, I imagine.

Happy to report that the Gator GTSA-GTRBASS case (along with several bubblewrap "buffers" to keep the instrument from sliding around) got it home in perfect shape. Michigan > Las Vegas > Chicago > Vegas again > Los Angeles > Melbourne, all as checked luggage and with two TSA inspections (they left their calling cards), handled just fine.

All that remains is to have it looked over by my local tech then get to playing!

Amboyna Burl, anyone?

No denying the great sound of a Roscoe low B!
We played a couple songs that really needed the low B this weekend so the Roscoe got the call.
It sounded huge in the house and IEM's and .... well OK in the live stream but even our live stream couldn't hide the Roscoe's low B string.:)
Added bonus is we used a string ensemble for the service today and they really shine in the choir special @ 23:00. The choir sounded excellent too!

Music starts @ 8:12
