Roscoe Club

BTW, I asked Keith directly in a phone call about putting frets in an aluminum lined diamond wood fretless, and he said said it wouldn't work.

I realize there could have been some subtext of (1) I don't have time, (2) it's a dumb idea, (3) I don't want to...
:D

But for me that was the end of the story.

Also as I'm comparing the FB of the fretless to the fretted, it seems like the FL is a lot thinner and putting frets in it may go past the entire depth of the FB and into the neck itself. Either way, it's very clear for various reasons... NOT A GOOD IDEA!

What top wood do you guys think that this is?
I’m thinking blackened redwood but not sure.

As long as we are playing guess the wood, did Keith build basses with maple/wenge /maple necks? Or does Purpleheart turn brown over time?

As a side note, the serial # is 5860 (I think), can anyone approximate the age for me?

As Chris and Andy stated, yes!
And wenge is an up charge.
It also adds wonderful growl!:bassist:

A few months ago a local guitarist posted on Facebook that he was starting a new band and to contact him if interested. I did contact him and have been rehearsing and performing with the band. We do a variety of tunes from Donald Fagen, Steely Dan, Ray Charles, Earth, Wind and Fire, Pat Martino, Leon Russell and others.

We played a two set gig yesterday and for the first set I played my Ibanez GWB 205. The Ibanez is a really great bass after a trip to Brady Muckleroy who did his magic on the fingerboard. I was playing through my Mesa Subway WD-800 into one Subway 115. It sounded terrific.

For the second set I switched to my Century 5. I was perfectly happy with the GWB but had brought the Roscoe along so I played it. The tone went from terrific to "oh, my goodness".

My Century is one that I found on Reverb. The seller was in North Texas but was coming South on vacation and we met in a town North of San Antonio and I bought it for $2100 cash. The bass has one tiny mark on the back of the body but otherwise is as new in the Roscoe hard case. I put TI Jazz Flats on it and it is just so very fine to play.

A lot of Roscoe basses have passed through my collection and some I would just love to have back. I have come to my senses now and the 3 Roscoe basses I own are going nowhere except with me to gigs.

The Ibanez GWB is a fine bass, loved by many. I have a couple Yamaha 5's (TRB5 and the original Nathan East 5 from a friend that used to play but doesn't anymore and said I could have them) around that are great basses from the 90's, and a G&L JB2, that was a gift from my wife, that has some awesome custom pickups and sounds like a jazz bass. All great basses, but I rarely gig them.

It just shows you how great Roscoe's are. I just bought back my fretless Century 5 to have the pair with my fretted Century 5. My Classic P rounds out the trio for me. I need to get a family picture on of these days. The only problem with 3 amazing basses is deciding which one to bring to the gig!

I just got this and Saturday I had my first live gig with it. I'm still tweaking the sound and last night put DR Black Beauties on it. Love the sound but the feel is kind of sticky almost, like rosin. I'll see how it goes with them. It came with flats which I liked, but I've ways been a roundwound guy. So this seemed like a decent middle of the road.

The BB's do feel a bit tacky when you first put them on. They lose that tacky feeling after playing them a few times.
I've also heard that some guys wipe the strings down with Denatured Alcohol to remove that tacky feeling of new strings.

I had Dunlop flats on my fretted 5 for a while. It felt great, and I liked the sound fine, but there's just something about Roscoe and D'Addario nickel rounds - fretted and fretless - for me. I like rounds on my fretless as well - for the mwah. The D'Addario's don't break the bank, either, at $27 a set. I can change a little more often without going broke. My Classic P has TI Flats so I'm covered for a while.

FB_IMG_1706035328824.jpg FB_IMG_1706035291589.jpg Well here we go again. Another beloved Roscoe back to its rightful owner. Here's the one I'm looking for. If you see it/have it/sold it to somebody I would like to talk to them.

It's old, '80s or early '90s, called an LG 2005, active EMGs, three knobs (duh), MPM neck, Burly-man walnut flat top. Kind of like a standard I guess. It's what started my Roscoe obsession
