Lol
Funny Dave.
As Shane stated, very subtle differences discernible in the recording. You can tell a little more during an A/B into an amp.
Got to say though, this is an awesome bass! If I was to build one now, I wouldn't change anything (other than maybe add a top because I'm so vane!).
Mahogany body, wenge finger board, 3-piece maple neck (or maple/PH/Maple works just fine too), Bart 3-band pre and Bart p/u's.
That's the recipe folks!![]()
Honey Badger pickups are more open sounding to me. Greg @RocketMusic did a P bass pickup comparison, he may have a link on his website. I have the jazz pickups in my Classic Custom and it sounds good!Have a few questions for the group here. I picked up a slightly used Century Plus PJ 5 this week and so far I'm really digging it except for one thing. It has the Aguilar PJ set up with Aguilar OBP-1 BP preamp but in both passive and active modes the P pick up sounds like there's a blanket over it it's very dull sounding. I also have a Fender P5 with a Nordstrand pickup and it's plenty bright for comparison.
I love everything else about the bass but sound wise it's really not usable right now. I don't want to return it maybe there's something I'm not seeing. Any suggestions are welcome
So this is back up and tempting me a bit.
Roscoe LG3005 Fretless Natural/Flame Honey Blonde
I am unfamiliar with the black back and neck. IS this something they do at Roscoe? I've never seen it before. I wonder what that does to the feel of the neck? Playability?
Anyone have experience with a finish like this? Was it after market? Doesn't seem factory to me.
The ebony board is what is tempting. I liked my diamondwood boards but I still remember the feel of that real ebony on that SKB I played at Rocket Music 6 years ago.I had a gloss neck before, it was like playing a Marcus Miller J bass. I took a scotch brite pad to it. I bet the Ebony fingerboard is to die for on that bass.
That's a sign that it's meant to be lol...So this is back up and tempting me a bit.

Please do. Then I can stop thinking about doing something stupid. Part of me wants a fretless 5, and part of me thinks about going to 4 string instead of 5's to make myself think about what I'm playing more and work toward slimmer necks as I get older and my hands start to hurt. That is a nice bass. I think I'll but it!!
Quick pic of my PJ5. Still debating the sound issue. Most likely the Aguilar is just a dark pickup and I'm used to my Fender P5 and my Stingray. Also here's a couple sound clips so you can hear the difference between the Fender and the Roscoe in passive.
Other than that I love everything about it. Plays great, light weight, has the specs I wanted (PJ5 with active/passive and 18mm spacing)

Not as of yet I will this weekend. Just played it at the house and with headphones. Might be a different story in a live setting.I had that same setup except Wenge fretboard and it sounded amazing in a full band mix. It was a bit warmer than other basses I had but still had great clarity and cutting ability when slightly favoring the back pickup. Have you tried this bass in a live band mix yet?
So, the headless string change didn't go well. First off, it's a pain, mostly because the ball ends won't stay put in the bridge jaw things while you're trying to thread them through at the head end. Anyway, I managed to get the EADG strings installed and tuned to pitch, but the B string didn't work out. The tuning peg is as tight as it will go and the string is still way short of B. I uninstalled the string and repeated the install several times with no luck. So, the bass is unplayable until I figure this out. Jeff Moote or JoelFT, are you there?![]()
I adjusted the assembly all the way forward and the tuning peg all the way loose before starting, as directed. I'll give it one more shot tonight. Thanks for weighing in!So Dave, do you maybe need to turn the tuning knob CCW some (or CW depending on what takes the assembly closer to the nut) before installing the string to allow the device to put more tension on the string (that would allow more room for the tuning knob to tighten the string to pitch)?
I didn't pay much attention to the design of the bridge when you brought it to the GTG but it sounds like that may be your issue.

I got it, thanks to Gard. The B string wasn't cut short enough (nor the E and A.) All good now!
I have the instructions and thought I had followed them to the letter! I found it hard to cut the strings short enough -- every time I pulled a string tight through the gauge tool at the head end, the ball end would pop out of the bridge jaw. I actually called my wife in to help hold things down. If the ball ends won't stay put, it's a two-person job. Good thing I only change strings @ once a year!Glad that you got it. I am not sure if you got a copy of the instructions they provided with the bass/hardware, but they are pretty good. The most common mistake is cutting it too long. Other than that I found it pretty easy, actually. Not quite as quick as conventional tuners, but not really any more difficult. Just a couple extra steps.
