Roscoe Club

I have the OmniCabSim it’s a great box. Sounds killer and a lot of flexibility. I have the Ampeg SCR-DI as well.

I have never used a pedal/effect where from the first minute I used it I knew it would be a “permanent” addition. Especially with this pedal and the fact that almost all my gigs are DI/IEM on a silent stage. It sounds like I’m using an amp. I am dumping my effects (I really only used one pedal for one tune with most of them) and going to this. It is replacing my always on drive and I may even dump my compressor (again) as there may even be a little of that going on. I could easily be back to my Pedaltrain Nano with my tuner, the OmniCabSim, and my Rolls IEM receiver.

So one of the challenges of really low action on a fretless (to optimize mwah) is maintaining an even attack on every note you fret and pluck. I've not used a compressor in a long time but I'm thinking that maybe that would help even things out. Any of you Roscoe guys experimented with using a compressor? I suspect that it would help keep all the notes more even on a fretted too.
One that seems to be highly recommended for bass is the Alesis Nano Compressor (no longer manufactured). At any rate, I ordered a used on off of Reverb.com this morning. I'd love to hear from some of you fretless (and fretted) players to hear how you addresses playing more evening with low action. And if any of you have any experience using the Alsis Nano compressor I'd love to hear how you ended up using it (or if it helped any).

I go back and forth on compression. It was on my last board, but I’m debating taking it off on the new minimal board. I think my technique is good enough where it doesn’t really help me out. It doesn’t choke my dynamics, but I do notice a difference when it’s on.

I think my next board will be tuner, OmniCabSim and Rolls IEM receiver. That’s it.

I've fulled with Compression in the past and found live it doesn't really help much to make a difference enough in a full band mix. Now in recording it is very nice feature to use. Most new digital boards and house systems have very good built in compression that can be used if needed in a band mix.

Right. I let the sound guy compress if he needs to. Same reason I am dumping my effects - except the OmniCabSim. I don't think they make enough of a difference in the house to warrant dragging them around. Back to a Pedaltrain Nano for me.

I had never heard of that OmniCabSim pedal until you posted it yesterday. After researching and listening to some demo's I'm curious about one of those. I feel like that would be a good Pedal for to have for IEM gigs.

The demos don't do it justice. I only discovered it a couple weeks ago. I have tried all kinds of ways to get the "sound of an amp/cab" into my IEM's as 90% of my playing is done via DI/IEM. I tried leaving a drive on but very light. I tried a REDDI and just didn't love it like others seem to do. Never been a fan of Sansamp. I knew of the Torpedo C.A.B. but it is so expensive and I like to stay away from menu driven and it has so many options, more than I need for live gigs I think. Great for the studio though I would guess.

A friend of mine happened to have a OmniCabSim and let me try it. From the first 30 seconds I knew this is what I needed to breathe some life into my IEM and FOH sound. Sound guy noticed immediately. I should have my own in a day or two. It'll go on my Nano board with a tuner and my Rolls IEM receiver.

I am never excited about effects/pedals as I have always been a straight in kind of guy. This pedal is legit.

The OCS is AWESOME for IEM's. I have one on each of my pedal boards. It is really the best sound that I have ever had when recording or with my IEM's. The tone is so lively and punchy. I don't have enough good things to say about that pedal.
I use a small board with my original band that has a tuner, an empress compressor, a darkglass VMT deluxe and my OCS. My larger board that I use with my cover band adds an Alpha Omega, an octaver, and chorus.

I thought the same thing Shane. I listened to a Youtube demo and it sounded quite impressive.
That's one of the things that I despise about an IEM gig. Everything sounds so sterile through the ear buds.

Like I said, I never push pedals, but if you do any amount of IEM gigs, you need to try this pedal. It's $259, which isn't cheap but it isn't that bad either - especially for what it does. The DI is great. No one is missing my Radial JDI. It also has a mini aux in for your music player and a mini headphone out with a volume control. It's a practice rig in one unit.

Seriously, I haven't pushed a product this much since discovering Genz Benz/Genzler and Roscoe.

I sold my JDI and my Neve DI after playing with an OCS for a while. It's funny. I don't even look at amps like I used to anymore.
I'll keep my DI's (JDI and RNDI) for the LiveSound business but mostly I use a DarkGlass pedal DI live. Between its EQ and the board's, my live sound works well enough, but I am always on the lookout for 'better.' The latest crop of DarkGlass Ultra pedals is coming out with cab-sim IR toneprint capability, and if they release a Vintage Ultra with this feature, I probably won't be able to resist...

I do use a MarkBass Compressore set with fairly slow attack and mild ratio - I like what it does for the warmth but no, it's probably not noticeable at live gig levels to anyone but me...

Amps have never really been a part of "my sound" so once I settled on Genzler I was pretty set. But I know what you mean.

@SteveC, I think it's obvious you like the OCS!

Sorry.

What does that mean, exactly?
Didn't know Rolls did wireless stuff, so I'm not understanding what you mean by receover...
Model number, pls?

We do wired IEM's in both my groups. I use a Rolls PM50s as my IEM receiver/amp. I had Dave (Exaltbass) make me a cable that has a headphone extension and bass cable together. That way I have just one cable running between my board and my bass. You can kind of see it here.
iemdi.jpg

The bass end of the cable has the 1/4" to plug into my bass and the female end of the headphone cable extension to plug in my IEM's. It works great. I have replaced the JDI with the OmniCabSim but this is my board.

I don't like the feel when a compressor is used. I like to play with dynamics and the compressor masks that.

Chuck, that's typically me but with the action set so low on this new fretless I found that it's extremely hard to control my hands (both fretting and plucking) in a manner that the notes are all even sounding (when I want them to be). I could raise it some but I totally love the mwah and growl with the low setup. I'm hoping that the compressor will even things out a bit and I can focus more on my intonation. Having to concentrate too much makes my head hurt!:)

IMO, you will need a compressor that gives you control over all the parameters - this is not a job for a 1-knob unit...
For evenness you'll want a low threshold and fast attack so it's "always (or mostly) on."
Coupled with fairly low ratio to preserve some dynamics.
It's a constant balance...
You may find that your technique improves at about the same rate you come to terms with the compressor settings ;-)
I like mine and what it does for the sound - especially live, where it's more audience-protection screwup insurance than anything ...
