Roscoe Club

Off topic here, but hoping our Middle Georgia crew (and anyone in Alabama) is safe and sound after yesterday's tornadoes.

Hey Dave. We had several tornado's touch down within the middle Georgia area but I haven't heard of any serious injuries. We had several homes destroyed but the occupants managed to escape unharmed. Could have been much worse but obviously still not good for the families that lost their homes.

On the subject of TI Jazz flats, EB Cobalt Flats and D'Addario Chrome flats .....
I've currently got a set of each one on my 3 basses.

The EB Cobalt flats are on my fretless and they sound really good. Super low action and lots of mwah and growl (ebony board). Much smoother sounding than RW's.

I've got the D'addario Chrome flats on my Roscoe Custom SKB Signature (although I rotate the DR Hi Beam every few days depending on my mood and the music I'm playing). The Chromes can do the old school thing and can really sound quite modern (with a little EQ). Oddly the truss rod setting on the Roscoe works for both sets.

The TI Jazz flats are on my Fender Elite. They do the old school thing really well but still manage to get a really good modern sound (with the treble boosted). They are definitely looser tension than the Chromes and EB Cobalt flats (and require a truss rod adjustment).

Feel wise, I think that the Chromes and TI's feel the best. The EB Cobalt flats feel just a bit tacky.
If I had to pick just one, I'd go with the D'addario Chrome flats.

Do the EB Cobalt Flats fit a 35 inch scale? It seems that they only have one option for 5 string basses.
I'd be willing to try them if they do!
I have them right now on my 35" 3006 fretless.
It boggles the mind how Ernie Ball cannot figure out how to make a 0.030" string for High-C applications, but there you go...
So I have one leftover D'Addario HalfRound mounted as C. I don't play the C much, and it sounds compatible anyway.

I need to replace the volume pot on my LG Custom 5 as its crackling and cutting out (contact cleaner didn’t work) could anyone tell me what value pot I need to order?
The electrical part is straightforward - in fact, it should be marked on the one you have.
What was hard for me was the mechanical aspect.*
Measure carefully to make sure you are getting the threaded shaft diameter and length you need. And to a lesser extent, the operating shaft specs too - although those are easier to work around.
___________
*My older SKB needed a smaller diameter threaded shaft than what is widely available now. Even Roscoe didn't still have any in stock. I finally sourced some from Asia via EBay. I was disinclined to simply drill the hole bigger, as some suggested...

Ok I’ll check those out too. Thanks.

Does Plek take care of fret sprout? If I'm otherwise happy with my bass, can I just get a file and take care of this myself? Luthier forum says a simple 10" metal file and a few light strokes will take care of it.

Personally, I have done this on several basses and guitars (not one of my Roscoes) and haven't had any issues. The key is taking it slow, usually a few passes will make a big difference, but you may want to tape off to protect the board and neck wood. After I do this, I usually follow up with some VERY fine cloth sandpaper ~1000 and then ~2500 or higher, but that's going to depend on how much bite your file has. I personally like to do this on MUCH cheaper instruments first! :-)

I have a Tribute G&L JB-2 that has some sprout as well. I may go to my local hardware store and get a metal file, some sandpaper, painters tape and see what I can do on the G&L and when I'm confident move on to my Roscoe.

I use a file, tape over the wood between the frets on the edge of the board and the body where the neck meets the body, and use fret erasers smooth over the file marks and any sharp edges the filing may have created.

Steve. Order a "three-corner file with smoothed leading edges" from Stew-Mac. It's intended for fretwork and will do the cleanest job. I know that you don't want to scar the side edges of your finger board.:)

I finally got Kansas' "Song OF America" down well enough to attempt recording and playing over it (with most of the bass removed using Gold Wave). The only problem is that Hope plays with a lot of treble on the tune so so you can still hear a lot of the bass parts. I installed the DR Hi Beams for this one (on my SKB-3005 Signature). I had to play through the entire song without over dubs too because it isn't in sync with my "click" track in Reason. So ...... you'll hear a few notes a bit off (and it would have a been a pain to fix it.
But it was lots of fun trying to cop the sound and feel of the song. Again, it makes me realize just how good of a bass player Dave Hope is! I couldn't imagine doing a full set (or two) of tunes like this one!:jawdrop:

Note: I had to shorten the song because it was too big to upload to TB. At any rate you'll still probably think it's too long!:D

Unfortunately I cannot open the recording
