Steve I have an almost identical setup. I might add that you being a teacher are able to get the student cost of Logic Pro. Well worth the upgrade.

Yeah, I can get the "beefed up" Macbook Air (8 core, 8MB/512GB) for $1,149. There's an educator bundle with Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, MainStage, Motion and Compressor for $199. I wasn't going to get the bundle as GarageBand and iMovie seem to be plenty for what I do. I feel I'd want to bump the memory a bit if I went to those "Pro" apps. That adds $180. I was hoping to stay closer to the $1K range and that pushes it up to the $1.5K range. Only $500 more, but I'm not sure I really NEED those Pro apps.

But isn't that why you'd want a P bass, for the dull unique, less EQ'd sound? It's like having a Jazz bass with a pre-amp in it. It defeats the purpose of going in that direction.

Here is my strange idea for a Precision wiring circuit: Passive with stacked V V controls and T (no drilling). Lower V is for 2 strings (E, A). Upper V is for 2 strings D, G. The thinking is that there could be some interesting tonal shifts, totally passive, with just very slight changes in string group volumes.
Otherwise, I'm with Ray, thinking that the unique tone (one really great tone) of the Precision is its own type of Swiss Army knife. It doesn't have a blade for everything. It just has "one blade" that works for almost everything. "No mustache needed for the Mona Lisa"

Well first I've got to say that I can tell that you were a guitar player for a long while before you played bass (based on your description or opinion) of a P-Bass.
I do usually prefer a P-bass passive because a passive P-Bass does have a great sound (of course your description describes it as dull unique; not sure what dull unique means).
However, that particular used Roscoe classic bass is a P/J which is a bit of a different animal than a P-bass. On a P/J I sometimes like the sound of active EQ.
The bridge Jazz p/u can really sound great with an active EQ (as does a blend of the P/J p/u's). I'd at least like to have the option of going active/passive via a preamp.
Now that we've addressed that issue, I'm still considering getting that boring bass. My problem is to get it I'll have to sell an original to purchase a copy.

That makes perfectly good sense, @staccatogrowl! You would think that wiring configuration already exists.
A P/J, J/P, P+J, whatever you want to call it, is just an attempt to have both type basses hanging on one strap in your hands. 
Leo would have never done that, except for sales.
Okay, so that dull unique sound is the low growl, which sounds the same to my (+30 years over bass) guitar ears. I think that's the very reason I never bought one. Probably works very well in the mix, but in the music store... nope!
And it's not to disrespect the instrument nor any player/anyone who likes it. I've grooved to the sound of many tunes with a "P" holding the bass down!
I suspect if I ever gravitate to a Precision or any bass with those pups in it, it would be a straight passive "boring bass" configuration.

I've spent most of today trying to talk myself into liking that trans orange Roscoe and I just can't (at least for more than 10 minutes).
I'd like that bass to go with my Classic P. I'd swap the neck P pup for a jazz though. Then I'd have a pair of 4 string passive P and J basses. Those (P with flats, J with rounds) and a pair of active Century 5's (fretted and fretless with nickel rounds) and I'd be set. I just don't think my wife would go for it - even though she bought me the P for Christmas last year.
You never know until you try.... the fact that it is another Roscoe is a great selling point!!
D'Addario nickel rounds.
D'Addario Nickel Rounds on my Century JB, Labella Black Nylon Tapewounds (760N-B, I think) on my Century with standard Bart CBs. If I remember correctly, I haven't changed the nickel rounds on the JB since I got it years ago. I guess I'm slightly blessed with not-too-acidic sweat, but my philosophy is: "if it ain't broke..."
Can't go wrong with the D'addario XL nickel strings if mwah is your thing.
That's what I used on all of my Roscoe fretless basses.
These days I'm using Ernie Ball Cobalt flats on my polyester coated ebony fretless. Still good mwah but a bit warmer tone (and a bit easier on the polyester coating) and sound a bit fuller in the mix.
The TI flats sound really good on a Roscoe fretless too.
