Roscoe Club

Don't know about anyone else viewing here, but anytime a FB image is linked, "I see nothing*." The only way I know it is FB is by hitting "Reply," to see the coded link. I imagine some nice images have been missed due to whatever reason. Otherwise,

That standard Century 6 looks VERY familiar.

I'm not happy with the mwah that I am getting from my Roscoe. Am considering selling. Slight bow in neck. Low action. I thought Roscoe were superior fretless? Only thing, I know I need new strings, but how much difference could that make? Thinking Zon. And yes I know mwah is in the player as well. When I roll my fingers I don't hear enough the mwah. I do slightly. I did this before for advice and no expert I can bring it to. I'm just out of ideas. I also added business cards in cavity to lower saddles more. Thanks for any more advice

Are the pictures the most current of the bass and strings? I saw the FB post where Keith asked you to email him. Have you considered doing what he suggested?

Reaction 1: "Uh oh, tapered strings on a Roscoe. ."

Reaction 2: "Isn't it interesting to see tapered strings sitting in saddles intonated for non tapered strings. ."

Reaction 3: "Roscoe factory spa treatment recommended for possible 911 issues (several others apparent, but not mentioned) with this bass. ." Sure is a looker though!

Those strings are entirely too low for a proper mwah setup, IMO. There is a sweet spot that is lower than a fretted setup, but not THAT low.

Obviously, sending to Keith, reading his suggestions and doing that, or taking it for a setup are the best options.

If you can't do any of that for some reason, I'd take the card 'shims' out of there, install the neck, set for a very small amount of relief, and start with the strings higher in the saddles (strongly consider non-tapered strings as it changes the string center geometry). I have about 2.0mm of relief at the 12th fret on my B string, and 1.4mm on my G string at the 12th (pictured), and it sings.

My other fretless is a little lower (1.2mm G at 12th), and I'd say while super comfy and slide-y(?), it doesn't sing (mwah, long decay) like the one at 1.4mm.

I've found that the most critical factor to maximizing mwah on a fretless is that the board must be leveled perfectly (or as perfectly as you can get it). The next critical thing is to set the board to as little relief as possible (without the notes choking out). Then I set the action as low as I can without the note choking out (<1.5mm @24th position).
I'm a bit surprised that you have your relief set to 2.0mm/1.4mm (and you still get good mwah). I don't currently have a Roscoe fretless but my relief is set to ~.6/.7mm. My current fretless has a thick ebony board but the mwah is really nice (and has EB Cobalt flats which are not quite as good at producing mwah at the nickel RW's). I had the ebony board leveled by Bob Groat in CA. and then coated with polyester and that really helped with producing more mwah.
Of course all fretless basses are a bit different and what works on one doesn't always translate exactly the same on others. Sometimes it takes a bit of experimenting with various adjustments to zero in on works best for each fretless bass.
All that said, I've heard a few recordings of your Roscoe fretless and I really loved the sound that you got (and it did have nice mwah when needed) so your settings obviously work.

Yeah. I suspect that a Plek properly leveling the fingerboard and a new set of traditional nickel RW's would help tremendously. I've had a couple lined Roscoes (this is for you @Bass Viking :D) that you could feel some of the metal lines in the finger board. That definitely affected the mwah (and overall sound of the bass). A Plek would also correct that (if it's an issue).

I really liked your recording of Jeremy Camps "I Still Believe" on Youtube. You really need to tweak that Roscoe fretless to your liking and add some fretless parts to that version. I love listening to players home recordings and you did a nice job on the tune (Beautiful basses too).
