Sister bought me a new camera for Christmas, and this is one of the first pics I took testing it.

Congrat's on the camera too. But Greg's right, you're using the gift prematurely!
Very, very different. Where the Soaps are thick warm and punchy, the J's are bright, clear and grindy, but still a bit punchier than I remember standard Jazz basses being, though I haven't played one in a long time.

For Christmas last year Kim gave me a gift certificate to my favorite photo/crack store. After going back & forth on what to get (there's a lens I really want, but a new version is coming out later this year) I decided to make a small investment and learn more about lighting. After going back & forth on what to get (notice a trend here?) I finally decided on a second speed light, a couple of stands, and a coupla' cheapo tools to soften the light. As I was learning a bit more on configuring the lights, I picked up a cheap backdrop...believe it or not, felt. A 108"x72" sheet cost me $15. Easy to work with, doesn't reflect a lot of light, and it doesn't need ironing. However, and in my house, this is a stinker, it does collect dog & cat hair. Sigh.
Anyway, finally got some time today to play around a bit. I'm totally touching the tip of the iceberg here, but this is fun. Before I put you all to sleep, here are some shots...

Even had fun with the piccolo bass.
I contemplated some photoshop work to edit out the pet hair, but heck...I'm among friends, right? As you can tell, correctly capturing the Blue Angel against the dark blue felt wasn't easy. For photo nerds, I used my Nikon D90 and 18-200mm lens. The speed lights (SB-800 and SB-700) were on each side, with the bass in the middle. I used the pop-up flash on the camera to fire the lights. The pics were taken in an otherwise dark hallway.
Here's to the beginning of the next chapter in the never ending saga, "Jerry Tries to Learn Photography."

Jerry, absolutely stunning photos!! Beautiful subject matter also. I think you are well beyond ‘learning photography’, but rather perfecting it. Thanks for sharing. (makes me want to get rid of my polaroid)

Nice job, Jerry! As you now know, photographing shiny things is it's own special hell. That Blue Angel and Face/Off are both spectacularly captured. Nice goin!
Jerry - fantastic! Lighting is everything, as I myself am learning...and I dig the felt background...may have to invest in that for the shop, as I'm becoming very disillusioned with my present "backdrop" for color and texture reasons...hmm...
One thing about Jerry photographing his basses - it makes me WANT ALL OF THEM.
Nice work. You did indeed do a good job of capturing what (I imagine) they really look like, which is a challenge.

Jeff, I'd want Jerry's basses if he took the pics with a disposable camera. The guy's got SICK taste in basses, and you know the CDO, he keeps 'em WELL maintained.

I'm detecting a disturbing lack of ball end alignment here...
...and here...
...it's like there was a huge disturbance in the force, where millions of ball ends cried out in fear, then were silenced all at once...

Here's a testament to the durability of DR Lo-Riders, folks. Both basses are wearing them, and both were last touched by the boys in the Roscoe shop...the Red Devil in April, and the Blue Angel in July. My CDO conflict lies in wanting to change strings (and, of course, properly align the ball ends), but not being able to do so just yet since both basses sound so darn good.
So there.

Ray, when the boys @ Roscoe HQ say they want to lay hands, who am I to argue? Of course, by now I'd have hoped Gard would include ball end alignment on the master checklist, but as you know, it's not always easy training bass players.
