Rush usually plays the outdoor venues here. Probably waiting until spring of 2013 for a good date. Just checked the calendar and Sept. 22 is a Saturday so I'm for sure coming to St. Louis!

Same here, but it looks like all these dates are indoors. We'll see, hopefully they do a second leg and hit St. Louis again. They didn't on the Time Machine tour.

Happy also to see that Clockwork Angels is getting a Vinyl release. At least my home listening will be free of the loudness war.

Rush is my favorite band so I am pretty critical about everything they do. I dont get the love for the song or what I have heard from this album so far. I understand its new and every time Rush puts out a new anything its labeled as the best ever etc...I get it. The solo is good and when you listen to the song its heavy and riffy and the playing is great overall. So its great that the guys can still play and I think touring first and then recording shows that. The last tour they were on their game for sure.

Honestly, these guys (while great players) dont have the chops to win me over on chops alone. If I want to hear awesome playing I will listen to Wooten, Satriani, Vai, Colaiuta etc...Dont get me wrong, the Rush guys are awesome but I never really got into Rush because of the chops. I got into them because they wrote incredible songs and incredible whole albums and the chops were the bonus. I do play bass because of Geddy because I looked at him as working mans chops (no pun intended)

But this is the problem. As someone mentioned above Rush has become a band that seems to just riff away on pro tools and then take some cool sounding lyrics and sync them together. Killer riffs and cool lyrics dont make a great song. I am waiting to hear the whole album before I jump to any conclusions but to see that Caravan and BU2B are the first 2 songs was disappointing. I was pretty underwhelmed by those songs as well. I was hoping they were not be the feature of the album.

The nice thing about Rush is their diversity. One mans Presto is another mans 2112 but its really hard to believe that this is the same band that wrote Power Windows and Moving Pictures and Counterparts and Grace and Signals etc. I think Test For Echo is better than this.

Rush hasn't had a great album since 1993. I thought Vapor Trails had a few good songs on it. I though Snakes and Arrows was boring. Working and News were ok but overall I thought it was their weakest album. Hopefully HF will have some stuff on it that will make the album worthwhile or I will warm up to the first 3 songs...

Where is the melody? Where is the hook? Honestly the new Van Halen album seems more interesting at this point. Some great hooks in a couple of songs and Eddies playing is face frying from what I heard on it.

Vapor Trails is the best thing I've heard from them in years. Unfortunately it is the worst produced album they ever put out due to the murderous use of compression. I hope they remix it and re release it some day. Seriously, that is one of the absolutely worst sounding records of all time. It's painful for me to listen to it.

I like blue and I dont get why anyone would like red. I like blonde and dont get why anyone would like red heads. Although there is a cool new red head that makes my face fry. Oh and new VH sucks.

To each his own. I think S&A is top 5 all time for the boys, and I love the three songs we have heard so far.

But I'm also not a huge fan of Grace, Signals, Presto, or Roll te Bones. They each have a few great songs on them but that's it for me.

And yes the new VH sucks. It's a phone in from 30 year old demos.

Interesting. One thing I think that's great about the band is they have so much good material, and so many of us fans have albums we can pick and choose from. While I love Counterparts, Snakes and Arrows, 2112, Hemispheres and Permanent Waves (among others), I didn't like Vapor Trails or Roll the Bones as much, and wasn't a fan of the Time Machine concert (S&A concert I love). But that's just me. The 3 new tracks-- I love 'em! It's interesting to hear other Rush fans' opinions about what they like and don't like, as opposed to Rush haters complaining about everything.

Edit: oh, and I kinda like the new VH.

Yeah, the whole thing with Rush is the polarity. I happen to love PW and HYF because I think Geddy rose to new heights as a bass player and his tone was killer! I was in the beginning stages of player back then and thought what he was doing was really great and new...and it certainly was influential on me. Then again I love a lot of Grace Under Pressure and there are several songs with really no bass.

Force 10 to me is Geddy doing something very unique and cool. Now he just plays a lot of riffs. Great tone but nothing there that is super unique.

I kinda just dig great songs and melodies. Something about many VT songs and most of S&A just rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe I am just to into the synth period of Rush. This new stuff just seems boring to me because there is no hook. I thought Far Cry was boring as well as One Little Victory.

I think Sweet Miracle was the best song they have done in the last 10 years and most Rush fans hate it so......

I think My Favorite Headache is better than the last two albums.

I think Show Dont Tell, Roll the Bones, Distant Early Warning, Big Money, Cold Fire, and Open Secrets, Mystic Rhythms are ****ing brilliant songs.

But that is what makes them great. They sort of transcended all types of styles and appeal to many people.

I think Geddy's tone on Headlong Flight sounds like a Rickenbacker. It does have that Jazz bass growl though, but if I just randomly heard that song, and knew nothing about Geddy's current basses, I would have probably confused it for a Rickenbacker of some sort.

I see where you are coming from. I didnt become a fan of theirs until HYF and I consider the Wal tone he got as my all time favorite bass tone bar none. I love their 80's stuff up until Presto and RTB...some good songs on them but alot of filler imho. I also think that Time Stand Still was their most melodic song ever.

I wrote on a Rush board recently that I do agree that HF doesnt have a "sing along vocal melody", Caravan doesnt either. The songs are heavy and complex. However, I never felt their calling card was vocal melodies. Yes they do have lots of songs with great vocals but they are not Journey or Bon Jovi and never have been. Like many Rush songs, it takes me a few listens to grow on me and HF is definitely growing on me.

I agree with Bruins29 about the lack of melody in this song. I've listened to it several times now, and while the bass is awesome, I feel the vocals were just kind of thrown on top (interestingly in the Rolling Stone article it says the song was originally going to be instrumental). I also feel that while the super heavy guitar tone is cool, they need to thin it out when the vocals come in. I feel like there are times in this song where it just sounds like a mess of noise and each individual instrument gets lost. What I love about Rush from like 79-82 is that the songs are so complete yet each instrument is featured and can be heard very well.

I'm still looking forward to the album. I liked a few songs of S&A and I'm sure there are a lot of great things to come from this one. Bass wise I think Headlong Flight is my favorite of the three singles so far. Song wise I think it's my least favorite.

I played it on a system with a sub that will do 30 hertz, and there was some low end going on that is missing from S&A. I don't know if it was a Ric or not, but the tone seemed different (in a good way ) to what I have been hearing of late.

Yeah, I would say the Wal period is my favorite for sure. The Hold Your Fire concert was my 1st concert and I was blown away. Presto and Roll the Bones were not as strong as the previous 4 albums I agree but there are some real gems there.

Counterparts was awesome and showed they still had it.

I agree Rush is not the big harmonized hooks and looks and all that like the bands you mentioned (granted I like Journey and a lot of the 80's bands a lot). While I dig chops (obviously) I like the frosting to have a lot of cake and I prefer cake and cake to me is strong song writing. Take a song like Available Light off of Presto. No chops, not much going on but Geddy is putting so much emotion into that great song.

That is why I like everything from Queesnryche and Megadeath to James Taylor and XTC. These bands have written some amazing songs.

I am going to give HF more listens and am really looking forward to hearing the whole album. It just seems that Rush cant write the type of great song that they used to (because its difficult) so they seem to be taking a bunch of riffs and combining them with some cool words that Neil wrote. They even admitted HF was supposed to be a instrumental and then added the lyrics Neil came up with. Its entertaining and cool but I dont think that 20 years from now people are going to think of Rush and think this Album.

I am not saying its bad music or that they are doing something wrong. Nick is pushing them in a direction and that is what they want to do. I think people who like heavier music probably love it and hate the 80's stuff.

I think Rush has finally priced me out of being a concert going fan.
Sorry I know this is a joyous thread, but the ticket prices rub me the wrong way.
Not to mention if you want a good seat you have to buy a "VIP package".
I've been a fan since 1977. I think that makes me a vip.
Still love them though and always will.
