I thought I recognized that 68 4001 ... I seem to remember that one is a refin ... yes no?

What pickup does it have in the bridge? looks like the early high gain with screw top poles.

The '68 has it's original finish, but as I remember, the owner polished it pretty good to bring it back to life. It has an original '68 Horseshoe pickup, but Geddy had his tech replace it with a current 4003 bridge hi-gain 'cuz he prefers the tone.

I was thinking of a different 68 on RRF years ago that got refinished to that color.

I put a 4003 pickup in my 68 and it totally screamed compared to the old weak horseshoe.

The reissue horseshoe is pretty much the same pickup as the 4003 high gain ... the high gain will have a magnet on the bass with iron slug pole pieces and the RIHS has alnico slugs. They sound almost identical.

I enjoyed playing my old 1968 4001 for many years, but I made a total switch to 5 string basses so I sold it.

I want a fiver so I can start learning Dream Theater material. Hopefully not all of the songs will require a sixer

My buddy (who beta tests for Fractal) sent me a picture of the order form last fall from Fractal Audio for Geddy's two Axe IIs, plus a controller. I also saw a picture of the two Axe IIs and the controller next to his basses on the current tour. He may still use the other gear, but he's definitely using the Axe IIs.

I'm not going to completely "nerd out" over this, but I saw them in St. Paul and I thought the jazz, Ric and P were the best sounding basses he used. The others didn't sound like anything special to me, just bass. The jazz was the jazz, the Ric was the Ric and sounded awesome, and the P (I'm not a P gut) sounded really good. Those 3 caught my ear. The others, not so much.
