As a guy who's sanded and refinished many of these necks, I must say that is an AWESOME job. I'm going that route next time I do one. I usually just leave paint on all of the headstock, but that looks way better.

Very good job!

Thanks ROJO412 that is my first neck sanding. I just wanted to save the sticker with the serial #. I figured I would try this first & if the lines didn't look good I could just go to town and sand it all. I think I was lucky.
I have been trying to convince myself I love the jazz for years. I really think the passive sub is the perfect bass for me.
Anyone have a passive sub 5 for trade?

Like I said above, I'd love to see some Sterling SUBs... #37 is for you!!!

Yeah I had a passive 5 SUB for a couple weeks in teal. Got it used and sold it. I didn't like the neck width.

To each their own, I suppose - I own both a SR5 HH and a SUB5, and the necks feel identical to me... I kinda gravitated that way since although the 5er neck is wider - naturally - the string spacing seems to be the same as on my Fender Jazz necks, so transitioning between them goes smoothly *for me*...

I got my white SUB this morning! :hyper:

It came with the original aluminium pickguard, but I immediately replaced it, I had already ordered a white one for this bass.

Beautiful bass, sounds and feels great. Yum. :bassist:

The bad thing is... it was shipped in a gig bag, no extra protection.

So two tuners got bent: D and G strings. Now I need to find replacements. I contacted the seller, so hopefully he will take care of it...
Who thinks shipping a guitar in a gig bag is enough protection??? :eyebrow::rollno::mad:

The good news is that it is functional for now, so I can enjoy it already. But the tuners are badly bent and vibrate like mad when plucking a string.
Please for love of all that is holy dont gut the preamp on this bass too!

Mcnach that would be early stingrays with a good mix of oil, a dash of wax, and slow heat to keep the colours.

Actually, early Rays were nitrocellulose finish on the neck. Middle period (early EBMM) were poly finish on the neck. Since middle 90's or so all Sterlings and Rays have the gunstock oil and wax finish on the neck. The exception being the classic series.
Some folks really put a lot into how the neck is finshed. I have one of each neck finish type and have never noticed which type of finish is back there while I am playing.
I think folks that "hate" finished necks must have their palms flat to the back of the neck. Which is not really proper technique is it?

Oh yeah, I picked up a black SUB on good ole CL for $280.

Ha, well... I'm toying with The idea of a John East 3-band on this, just like I did with my 2EQ Stingray.

The SUB has punchy mids, being wired in series, but that midsweep control on the East preamp is very very very useful.

Still... it remains original several months after I bought it. We will see ;-)
It is my number one bass now. And when someone says "oh, so it's not really a Stingray" I just smile.

Hey folks !

Count me in the club ! Just bought a used SUB active 5. It's a great bass and I got to admit that I prefer it than the stingray 5 I had (and sold) years ago.

But now, the only issue I have with the sub is that it came with no pickguard. And as you know, the SUB is discontinued and I can find no pickguard here in France.

I mailed Pickguard heaven and I've found that the price for a new one is very expensive.

So I wanted to know if someone here would be so nice to scan the shape of the pickguard of his SUB 5 and send me it by mail.
In that way a friend of mind will be able to make a pickguard for me.
Thanks by advance guys !

And since we said no pics = no bass, here is an action shot at a festival :)
