By the way Something, I strongly recommend Pickguard Heaven for their SUB guards. Mine was only about $30 shipped, and it fits perfectly.

I got my white SUB this morning! :hyper:

I just really like that white sub with the white PG. I think a black PG would really pop. Call me Ahab because I am hunting for the rare albino SUB whale.

We would probably have to rename the forum to EBMM S.U.B. 2003-2006 or something, since Sterling by MusicMan has come up with a new SUB range... which looks tasty, I admit, and first reports look positive, but it's an entirely different bass model from the EBMM SUBs.

Yes. Have not tried the new Sterling SUB range and presume they fine, but imagine entirely different beast to the EBMM SUB. Or are they?

Those are alright. I just think with teh texture of the finish and the slab bodies, the black and white ones come off best. Red ones are nice and the other ones I honestly do not care for.
I've never seen a white one for sale anywhere though. Must be rare.

I was looking for ages, nationwide in The UK, before I found mine. Then within 6 weeks, two more appeared, one locally!
Figures...

Different materials, different body shape and finish, different bridge, different pickup, different preamp... different company!
Yeah, I'd say they are different. ;-)

The concept is different. The EBMM SUB of 2003-2006 was to make a USA bass with many of the same components, reducing costs by using a different body wood, using a slab body rather than contoured, with a simple to apply finish...
The SBMM is simply a cheaper version of the SBMM range. They never used the same electronics, their SUB uses a simpler bridge type...

I'm not going to state one is better than the other, as I haven't tried the new range. Just saying they are not alike.
From what I hear, though, they seem nice. The black and maple 5 string SUB looks very tasty... and affordable. Same with the walnut stain one. Yum. If they play and sound good -even not as good as a Stingray or the original SUB- they seem very attractive.

But they are not comparable to the original SUB range. They are different in many key points. That's all.

Just wanted to point that out that while SUBs do use a different body wood than 'Rays of the same era, it's not necessarily different from 'Rays in general as some seem to believe.

Poplar was used in actual Stingrays in the '80s and '90s (may have been used in the '70s to, I don't know). Stingrays then came in poplar, ash or alder depending on finish. I think EBMM switched to ash only 'Rays right about the time the SUB came out, so your statement is still correct though.

I had no idea poplar was ever used on Stingrays. Thanks for that bit of info.

Not sure about this, but my '78 Sabre that I bought in... uh.... '78, was a hard rock maple with a clear finish. It also weighed in at about 12 lbs...

In other news... played the SUB5 in its first warm weather gig. The poly finish on the neck was a little too sticky for my liking. I'm wondering if some 000 steel wool will do the trick, or if I'm gonna have to do a full strip-down... suggestions?

i have a sub with the neck stripped.. here is how the original owner said it was done.. its a real nice smooth job.

"Started with 1000 grit wet or dry sandpaper then 0000 steel wool then Green scrubbie pad for the final. I used Tru oil (7 or 8 coats) for the finnish. Apply, let it dry good (3 hrs or so for me) then a light green scrubbie rub then another coat & so on. I also used birchwood casey stock conditioner to get it more slick with a nice soft cloth & lots o rubbin.
Alot of the original clearcoat was gone on mine but the clear & paint was very thin & easy to remove."

IIRC Poplar was only used infrequently. Alder and Ash were the predominant body woods.
I am happier with Ash bodied Rays myself. The one Alder Ray I owned had a hump around 600-800 hertz or so that I could never eq out satisfactorily. Could have been the different pickups they had in those fivers back then too. Ceramic? Alnico? I get confused.

Looks like you should pull me from the list.
EyeballKid has my old SUB now.
Good times. Enjoy!
