In examining this issue closely..the issue being the weak g string on most 5 string stingray is that there is a string spacing issue with the g string..its minute maybe 1mm or less but it enough to cause the g string to have less contact space on the fret causing weaker tone..even much so that many have reported the g string being pulled from the edge of the fretboard entirety. Some have tried to fix it by raising the pickup on the g side but that fix is a band aid. It would seem the only fix would be a custom nut to fix the g string spacing issue. Now improvement of technique can also help from pulling the string down too much. .but the issue is still there. I do plan on discussing this with a luthier and having a custom nut installed..

Imho that is a different problem and one I don't have with either of my 5 string subs. I the strings are centered on the pickup poles and the tiny area (about 0.2mm) of the string that touches the frets or fretless board do so perfectly.

It just sucks that is so easy to pull the string off the board when doing vibrato or just playing with abandon which otherwise is fine on other axes.

When I 1st started playing EBMM 5ers, I ran into the same problem with occasionally pulling the G string off the edge of the fretboard... I must have corrected my technique, as the problem "corrected itself", without any alterations to the instruments... I've only owned 3 EBMM 5ers: a BFR SR 5 HH, a Sterling 5 HS, and a SUB5 - and all three share the same string spacing... To be honest, I haven't even given it a thought in a long time until reading these posts - and I won't be changing anything on mine...

I also haven't had any problems regarding a weak G string - it just isn't an issue for me...

I only have the issue when doing some vibrato or bending the note. just have to remember to bend up and just don't do any vibrato on the g string.

Yea I do vibrato all the time on sustained notes. Maybe will get a new nut one day on the fretted one.... Fretless is easier since I use rolling vibrato of course. I find I only get this pulling string off board oops when shifting from my BTB 6 or my Carvin Bunny back to my main Axe.... My Sub 5 Fretted.

Had to chime in on this thread.

Just got back from a quick stop at my local GC. Saw one of the SUB Ray4's on the one and gave it a go. HOLY CRAP! What an immense amount of fun! Comes as close to an MM as I'll ever need to be, and I used to own a gorgeous Stingray 4 Classic. I'll be picking up a black/maple model very soon!

is the above a recurring post bot or something? :-)

I'm sure we got almost exactly the same post a few weeks ago about the sbmm ray4 sub basses.

Those are not the basses we're talking about in this thread. yes those are cool for $150 but nothing compared to the "classic-stingray-equivalent" (other than cosmetics and bridge mutes) EBMM USA made sub basses that this thread is about which were made from like 2003 to 2006 or something like that and have a cult following due to being some of the nicest basses ever made regardless of price.

Lol..I did play one of those and did enjoy it. But its nothing compared to my SUB!

Damn it! Sorry!

You are forgiven, sir. :eyebrow: :p

I had a "weak G String" on my old '82 Ray. Can't remember how I fixed it? I think I had to experiment with string brands and raise the pickup on the G side. From what I read on the problem it was pretty common on older 'Rays.

My Sub 4 has no issue with that problem. In fact, it's, IMO, an unusually even sounding bass from string to string.

Hmmmm...After visiting this thread again I think I'm going to play my SUB on tonight's gig! So there!
