You are forgiven, sir. :eyebrow: :p

I had a "weak G String" on my old '82 Ray. Can't remember how I fixed it? I think I had to experiment with string brands and raise the pickup on the G side. From what I read on the problem it was pretty common on older 'Rays.

My Sub 4 has no issue with that problem. In fact, it's, IMO, an unusually even sounding bass from string to string.

Hmmmm...After visiting this thread again I think I'm going to play my SUB on tonight's gig! So there!

From my research its only the 5 strings..

Played my SUB again last night through Orange terror bass 500 and sp212 cab
Awesome-compliments all round about massive bass sound that killed.
The growl is incredible without turning up gain,I,m meaning its growling but clean and articulate.
What a bass still going well after 10 years and still looks like new, that paint is indestructable apart from the neck where I,ve worn through the black paint to the maple underneath in a few places.
Pity they never made a maple neck version.

Indeed.
I also wish they had made them with maple fingerboards. That's the main reason I have a Stingray (natural and maple). If I could have bought a SUB in maple, that would be it

So I was pleased as can be with my SUB 4 until I read about the "problem" with weak G strings. Now, whether it is true or not, I perceive the G on my SUB 4 to be weak. Thanks a lot. :(

I dont see how as the issue is just with the 5 string..and its not so much thats its weak..its just the spacing puts it a bit closer to the edge if the fretboard that thus has less surface contact..which I think could be solved by either a wider gage string or custom nut replacement

The "weak G string" issue and the spacing and narrowness of the fingerboard which puts the G string close to the edge, are entirely different matters.

The G string close to the edge is something found on 5 string Stingrays. Not everyone finds that a problem, as it depends on individual styles and techniques.

The weak G string is, as far as I can tell, something people have talked about for decades! It seems to affect 4 string Stingrays only... but it's all a bit vague.
Many don't notice at all. Many argue it's a very clear issue. Some say it's the way the polepieces are arranged, markedly staggered. Others say it's the preamp. Others say it's an effect that's only very noticeable when using a combination of certain amp, preamp settings and pickups...
There are dozens of threads discussing the weak G string issue.
Do a search in The forum if you have time ;-)

Personally, I only notice it clearly on one of my SUBs. The one with the classic Stingray config: pickup wired in parallel and original 2 band pre. My SUB with the pickup in series is not so clear, neither is my 2002 Stingray with a 3 band John East preamp.
I did notice that thicker gauge G strings seem to reduce the effect, and so does boosting the mids a bit...
Either way, it's Not really been a problem, that's why the Stingray still remains my favourite bass.

The weak g string its due to the placement of the g string in relation to the fretboard..thats why using a string with a larger radius helps this problem (gives a larger contact area) this not a case of two unrelated incidents. They are one and the same.. simple cause and effect..honestly from my research its seems im the only person that put the two together..with is strange because all you have to do is looks and see that the g string is spaced wider that the rest of the strings. ...just my observations...god knows we dont want a debate (even though i kind of am, lol)

And yet... The center of each of my strings has identical spacing... G is not further over, only narrower than the D, like D to A.... Etc. Spacing is identical to my other basses.

I suspect that It's not positioning nor anything that only you have put together unless your bass has poorly cut nut or bridge saddle slots.

From what I remember, the "weak G" syndrome was fairly common on the older, vintage Stingrays. But my memory, in a word, sucks. I got my Mom's nose and my Dad's memory.

SUB 4 sounded great last night. Damn that thing has about the best neck I've ever played.

Well i suppose my nut is poorly cut because there is a difference in the g string spacing at the nut..take a look at the photos and tell me what you think..

Not really. ;-)
Search "weak G string" on this forum. It's a 4 string thing and nothing to do with how far from the edge it is. The G string is not close to the edge on 4 strings.
I think you are describing something else.

But we can disagree and it's ok :-)
